Briana

The recognized kingdom of northern Kadagard, Briana is named for its people, the Briane, and the region they inhabit, Brianey . This cold, wooded land is a harsh land ruled by the mountains, the forest, and the winter. Those who live here have to work hard to get anywhere, and that way of life is respected all across the country. Even the royal family learned the value of hard work to some capacity, against the unyielding ferocity of the region.

Structure

Briana is divided into seven provinces, each with their respective dukes with a body of lesser, local lords to help govern the entire province. These dukes make up a legislative body, known as the Briawæld, who advise the king on the happenings of their respective regions, as well as certain executive delicious, and sign and write laws, both provincial and national.   The local lords rule under the dukes rule the citizens of the provinces and handle the local government. This includes law enforcement and taxation, as well as certain festivals. These lords also have their own personal local militia, should the event of enemy invasion occur.   At the head of it all is the king, who is the figurehead of the government, all be it a powerful one compared to the usual usage of the phrase. While it is true that the Briawæld holds sway and could call for the king to step down or not partake in a course of action, the king does still hold a significant influence the court, being able to cancel the passage of laws, thus forcing a revote and reworking of said law, being able to write and suggest drafts of laws to the Briawæld, and completely holding four votes in the court, during wartime.

Public Agenda

Under the leadership of the Claiman line, the goals of the government have always been to protect the people and ensure their best interests. It doesn’t always work out that way, but the Claiman family is known throughout the region and is trusted by their subjects.

Assets

The most well-known of the exports of Briana is the lumber made from the Skywood trees, which makes some of, if not the, strongest shields in the world. The kingdoms close proximity to mountains also provides a rich source of metals, both precious and utilitarian. The allure of the rich gold or platinum reserves berried in the rock draws miners from all around, who intern give the iron they dig up to those who come to work as blacksmiths. Stonemasons also come here to work the beautiful snow stone found in the mountains. Should one be of a more humble life, or enjoy the wilderness more, Briana is also known for the fine furs made from the abundant and often wooly wildlife.

History

Founding

Between 34 to 45 c.p., Brianey was invaded by the Anslax people from the south of the Allfire Peaks. Using some of the tactics from the old Reaman Empire, they quickly swept across the lands of the Briane and began to have major influence among them. Their kingdom is often could Old Briana, although they did not call themselves that.
It is believed that in the beginning, the Briane put up a strong resistance, although a few did accept the new rulers. Whether it's because of the resistance was too strong or the "invasions" were never violent at all, the oldest surviving records, most of which are dated around 121 c.p., state that around these times the Anslax began to assimilate themselves into the Briane, the two cultures began to blend. At some point, the Anslax completely disappeared, being entirely subsumed by the Briane.

Demography and Population

Much of the people of Briana are either of Briane or Tuatha heritage, those being the native peoples of the regions Briana controls. It was, in fact, the braine who founded the nation, after centuries of interaction with the Anslax, whom the briane have subsumed. Other ethnic groups are immigrants or descendants of immigrants, usually because of historical interactions between their nations and Briana. The largest of the ethnic minorities are the Rema, who in the past had conquered the land that would become Briana, and the Vörðr, who have invaded the region of Brianey multiple times throughout history. The ethnic demographic of the nation is as follows:

Territories

Briana occupies the entire region of Brianey, and most of the passage through the Allfire Peaks. The majority of the population resides in the Wōdenwood, as does Camalin, the capital and largest city. Other major cities are usually on the outskirts of the forest or the banks of the Ælen, with much of the pupulace living in scattered villages.

Technological Level

Briana's people, the Briane specifically, have developed a special technique to working Skywood that has allowed them to monopolize the trees, something no other nation can even do. This technique is a secret among them, as well as an advantage for the nation. Walls and buildings are stronger than most other nations, with some being comparable to buildings made of stone. In addition, this technique has made Briane shields legendary for their durability

Agriculture & Industry

Briana is dominated by the lumber industry and is among the unparalleled powers in the Kadagaran economy. Specifically, they specialize in the cutting of Skywood. The Briane, the dominant ethnicity of the kingdom, have specialized techniques and technology for chopping the dense wood, and their lumbermen have been heralded as a result. The kingdom's territory is also ripe with the material known as Foch, or snow stone, with many quarries throughout the region, as well as mines for iron and rare gems. The is largely due to the region's proximity to the Allfire, as the material is primarily found in the mountains.
Outside the Wōdenwood are grand steppes that supply most of the kingdom's agriculture. The banks of the Ælen River feed the soil to supply farmers with apples, cherries, plums, carrots, parsnip, cabbages, peas, beans, onions, wheat and rye for bread, barley for brewing, and oats for animals. Wealthy landowners also grow grapes and produce wine. The open steppes provide many a pasture for sheep for wool and meat, horses for transport, and cattle for milk, and hides when they get old, with pigs being reared solely for their meat. Most other meat comes from hunting or fish from the river and its tributaries.

Trade & Transport

No matter the item in question, trade is almost universally done via the Ælen River, as it connects the kingdom to the eastern coast of Kadagard. Coulinhamm is a major port city, in the center of the passage within the Allfire, who's lord's fealty is to the Clamains . There are cities on the coast of Brianey, however, that do trade, mostly with the Vörðr tribes of Hadorstadir, much to their shagrin.

The official currency of Briana is known as shaelings. These are ovular, 2cm thick coins made of mostly silver, for those of the upper class, and bonze, for the lower class. The value of a certain coin is dependent on what is engraved upon it: a coin worth 1 shaeling has a skywood leaf, a 5 shaeling coin has a horse, and a 10 shaeling coin has a bear.
Major Exports
Briana's most prominent export is Skywood, a type of lumber hailed throughout the continent for its strength and durability. Shields and walls made from skywood are some of the toughest in the world, and Briana dominates territory where the trees are readily abundant. As a result, the kingdom has effectively monopolized the trees and is THE leading exporter of skywood.
Legislative Body
The legislative body of Briana is the Briawæld, a council made up of the dukes who govern the seven provinces. This council informs the king of the happenings of the provinces, advise him on certain actions, check his power, and discuss and write laws they believe should be ratified.
