Rathmund
A duke of House Caervil, successor to Meramund
He was ten years old when Aldemar, leader of House Kaevil presented himself at his father's court in Novryk and demanded the independence of his House from Caervil's authority. Until that point Rathmund had been raised to believe his father was the most powerful authority in the entire realm, yet he saw his father humiliated and recognised the admiration unjustly (in his eyes) given to Aldemar by his father's own courtiers.
The elevation of Aldemar to king a few years later burned Rathmund's pride even more and he resented the damage to his father's reputation and prestige.
Growing to bitter manhood he became first an envoy to House Malmor spending much of his time in Hrafburg and trying to gather allies. On the death of Meramund, Rathmund returned to Novryk to take up the Ducal seat. Caervil flourished as a result of excellent trade treaties with House Malmor and House Greendale.
After the death of Aldemar I, Rathmund sought to put an end to the impudent line of The Royal House of Kaevil diplomatically, claiming that any "charters, treaties and loaned authority" as he famously put it had been granted to Aldemar I and not to any succession. The Long Contention followed and if Rathmund had hoped that his currying of favour with the other southern Houses would lead to him getting his own way he was to be disappointed.
