Meramund

Duke of House Caervil in 650 who at first resisted the independence of House Kaevil (later to become The Royal House of Kaevil )   He was a bitter ruler, having been rightly criticised for his poor leadership during Troll Rise much of which he spent in the offshore security of Caercalvan Castle  and delegated much of the decision-making to his commanders, absolving himself of responsibility for any set-backs and quick to blame others for any failures. The successes of House Kaevil, then simply a subordinate branch of House Caervil were claimed by Meramund as being achieved under his instruction and command.   In 650, Meramund was humiliated in his own court when Aldemar of House Kaevil requested in a formal audience that his House had won, by its deeds and honour, the right to be independent. At first Meramund refused, dismissively demanding that his guards "remove this interloper from my court and cast him to the streets where he can learn the humility becoming his position."   The guards hesitated, fearing the young Aldemar's prowess, but Aldemar gave no fight and simply disarmed himself stating that if the Duke chose to slay him he would not resist, but that the world would know the measure of Meramund by what command he gave next. Meramund, unwilling to order the death of a young man of a heroic line, and realising the mood of his court was definitely against him, laughed off the disagreement as a joke and granted a limited charter of independence to House Kaevil.
Meramund never forgave Aldemar for that however and often spoke against "The upjumped sentinels in the north" and waited for Aldemar's arrogance to cause his downfall. It never did, and in 659, Meramund travelled to Sildern along with the rulers of the other Houses and after a month long council he, along with the others, ratified the proclamation of House Kaevil as royal and in rulership over all the other Houses. Meramund was the last to sign and it is reported that on the long journey back to Novryk, his temper was foul and his mood sullen and petulant.
He died in 663 after a decline in health over the previous two years that left him bed-ridden for the last six months of his life.
