Arthindon I
Second King of The Royal House of Kaevil.
His first real challenge as king was a challenge by the then Duke Rathmund of House Caervil who proposed that both the independence of The House of Kaevil and the royalty of that House had been awarded alone, and on a temporary basis, to Aldemar I and that following the death of that individual the terms of both would have to be renegotiated.
Rathmund's position was that a council of the Houses should be called and the next king of the land chosen and elected. There was considerable contention about this but it stopped short of the unsheathing of swords and was settled, finally, after a whole year of debates, alliances and messages. When the final vote was taken it was unanimous and ratified the existence of the royal line of kings and the acceptance of their rule. The entire process of this debate and discussion has been referred to by scholars as "The Long Contention", though sources differ as to whether the final acquiescence of the dissenters to House Kaevil was due to superior diplomacy, skill at debate, the threat of division and civil war, or as some have it, the divine authority of the gods who made their will known in a serious of dreams and visions to the heads of the houses concerned. Arthindon I had married at the age of eighteen, but his wife passed tragically of illness a few years later, having no issue. Following the Long Contention it was agreed that the King would take his second wife from among the daughters of Rathmund and he married Marellan who was a great poet and writer of renown.
