He was always a potential Keeper, but no one put much interest in teaching him and he lived all his childhood without ever considering that possibility.
It's only a happy coincidence that he has a natural disposition for helping and assuming responsibilities, but most of the knowledge he has it's thanks to his older sister and their uncle, and to his own curiosity.

An almost invisible square-shaped scar in the left of his chin. And a little larger one, an spiral, on his arm. Both caused by his sister when she was too young to control his temper or healing without leaving marks.

Education

He assisted to a regular school, which followed the national curriculum and added lessons to help wizards to understood and safely use magic.
When he turned fifteen he was supposed to take private lessons with special teachers because he was—technically—a potential keeper. But the teachers didn't care much about him because everybody knew that Margareth would fulfill that role.
Discouraged by that, he preferred to pursue other goals, and ended up focusing only on learning how to reign his uncommon amount of magic so it could be useful instead of dangerous. He ended up learning a bunch of magic with a wide range of uses. He was particularly good with Symbolism but he challenged himself to learn and use words too.
Ever since he was a kid, his uncle was the only one who really put any effort in explaining him the complicated reasoning and secret interests behind the ancient rules and the current practices. He knew that his uncle wasn't trying to prepare him to rule over the The Two Families, maybe he just enjoyed sharing his view of the world.
That knowledge, and what little he has learnt in his first lessons and talking with his sister and Genieve, would become the base of his formation when, almost two years ago, he ended up as the only potential Keeper.

Fred and Gregory met at school, during lunch. They don't remember when they became best friends.
