Erziehen

Overview

Towering high and above, Erziehen is the peak of Metropolita in Albietha. Dotting the Somber Lands to the far west are a series of six massive hydraulic elevators that act as both support and transport to reach the gargantuan, diverse, prosperous city that sits a comfortable five miles above the ground. A mess of massive Dickensian buldings and apartment complexes all made of brick and run through with spindly brown copper, and policed constantly by Erziehen's flawed and diligent military, Erziehen has the potential to house entire campaigns in its sprawling heights.   Erziehen is governed by the Erziehen Republic, a council of seven democratically elected officials who legislate and then deliberate.

Design and Layout

Erziehen is primarily powered by harnessed elemental energy. As such, much of the city is covered top to bottom in copper pipes that radiate the steam expenditure created by the utilized elemental energy. The elements are an entirely renewable resource; once expended, they are simply returned to the ether, and therefore harnessing energy can never be done to excess.   There are three floors to the city of Erziehen: Bleak, Fair, and Loft, stacked atop one another. Bleak was the first to be constructed, and was created without the leisure and planning afforded to the subsequent floors and, as such, is far more maze-like and overcrowded than the others. Much of the construction of Loft, the top floor, was actually completed before the Malignancy, and much of the floor is comprised of Abandonment Era mansions transported, groundwork and all, to the top of the risen city.   Bleak, its buildings packed tightly together, is prone to a great amount of rooftop travel by the city's more elicit job market. Power lines connecting Elemental power sources, insulated from the Elemental energy inside, act as great methods of dashing from building to building, and the alleys are often compact enough that a quick hop from building to building is easy enough to manage for most.

Life in the City

The first floor of Erziehen, Bleak, is covered in a constant overcast by the ceiling above it, and prone to serious overpopulation and negligence from the upper floors. As such, while living there is a warm welcome from the dangers of the surface below, Bleak offers its own challenges and dangers. Bleak is the level of Erziehen most commonly frequented by the Lanzekkte, Erziehen's once-glorious knights who are now no more than common thugs stealing from their people.   The second floor, Fair, is much comparable to a place like Bastion or Sotenia in its comforts and privileges. The smaller size of its proceeding floor allows far more light to creep into Far, and the much smaller populations assures that most who live there are doing so in ease. It is still heavily populated and covered in stores and restaurants.   The top floor of Erziehen, Loft, is a maze of mansions and gardens, reserved for only the most affluent. Outside of the violent influence of Corporations, Loft is considered the worst abuse of the Post-Malignancy world by the people living outside of the cities, and even many living within them. Almost all of the families living in Loft accumulated their wealth through the manipulation of the dwindling of resources brought about by the Abandonment and Malignancy, and held onto that wealth through underhanded tactics and the use of the less fortunate as stepping stones.   The towering elevators that hold the city aloft also act as micro-towns and Train Stations for the The Ezriehen Railroad, which spans the entire length of Albietha.

History of the City

The city of Erziehen originally formed as a coalitive subsect of the Gavlandian Empire. After the dissolution of the Gavlandian Empire following the deaths of Raziel, Hand of Light and Penjaga the Incandescent in 1643, Erziehen was one of the many locations to form a separate nation in the Northeast of the Somber Lands.   The Erziehen of the 1600s was a hopeful thing, brick houses and steam power, comprised of intellectuals and industrialists. Many of the industries that found life in early Erziehen grew to become the rising corporate powers, and many of the current upper class of Erziehen still have their hand in the manufacturing and distribution in the corporate world.   This push for Rationalism and Intellectualism in the post-god world led to the horribly ill-advised establishment of the short-lived Kingdom of Erziehen in 1643: a time universally regarded as ill-advised in which a group of wealthy business owners in the city declared themselves and their families royalty and took monarchical reign. This new power enacted sweeping political, economic, and city reform, leading to the creation of the city's Libraries and Universities.   Just twenty-five years later in 1668, after a revolution and a series of tactically placed beheadings, the Kingdom was dissolved and the Erziehen Republic was established, along with a mandate that the city would never again be under solitary rule.
