History
For the past 500 years, House Valchev has ruled Marinovica as its lighthouse keepers, arcane protectors, and masterful navigators of both the sea and politics. Their origins trace back to Valcho the Steadfast, a ship captain who led his people to safety during a violent storm that nearly shattered the fleet of early settlers. According to legend, as the storm raged, Valcho’s vessel was the only one to remain untouched by the waves, guided by an unseen force beneath the water. When the skies cleared, the settlers found themselves in a crescent-shaped bay—the perfect natural harbor that would become Marinovica. In the years that followed, the Valchevs established their hold on the city, overseeing its expansion into a center of magical and maritime power. Their mastery of conjuartion and elemental magic allowed them to fortify the coastline, control the tides, and ensure Marinovica remained protected from outside threats, earning them the moniker “The Lighthouse Sovereigns.”
However, whispered beneath the grandeur of their legacy is the mystery of their connection to the Leviathan — the ancient, sea creature said to slumber beneath the caves of the Inner Sea. While the Valchevs publicly deny any direct ties to the creature, old records tell of a ritual performed by Duchess Yana Valchev over 300 years ago, one that supposedly secured Marinovica’s prosperity. No details of this ritual survive, only cryptic inscriptions and fragmented sailor’s tales that warn of a price yet unpaid. Some claim that the family’s firstborn heirs are marked by the Leviathan in ways unseen, bound by an oath forgotten by time. Others believe the Valchevs possess knowledge of deep-sea magic that no other wizards or the Nauts dare to wield, allowing them to command the waters and summon storms at will. Whatever the truth may be, the Leviathan has never attacked Marinovica, and the city’s ships — unlike those of rival duchies — always seem to find favorable winds in troubled waters.
In modern times, House Valchev stands at a crossroads. While Duke Zlatomir Valchev rules with careful diplomacy, factions within the city — the Congregation, ambitious noble families, and even the Council of the Tide — question whether the Valchevs' power should remain unchecked. Rumors swirl that the pact with the Leviathan is fraying, and with the growing presence of pirates, unnatural storms, and shifting alliances, many wonder if the Valchevs can maintain their grip on the city without calling upon whatever ancient bargain once protected them. Whether their rule will persist as it has for centuries or whether the tide of fate will finally turn against them remains uncertain — but one thing is undeniable: House Valchev’s history is written in the waves, and the sea never forgets a debt.
