The Feywilds

In -1000 DE, the mountains of Northern Desmia had become the final sanctuary for peoples fleeing war. The Mathari Dryads had begun a ruthless war of terror towards the Human Desmians to the South. The Halcyon and The Masked One came together and blessed the mountains to be an eternal refuge. All those who entered without invitation would become lost at the border, trapped as space warped around them. Those within the Feywilds would be blessed with vastly extended lifespans and little need for food. Wondrous creations were made for these wild mountains to make them beautiful and strange.   There was a catch for all of these blessings. With long life comes a warping effect, physical and mental. The creatures' minds and bodies become long. Some go mad, others simply become strange. The introduction of Ederstone in 1801 ME only led to the environment growing strange, as mutated creatures interbred with the already surreal wildlife. Now the feywilds have become a land of danger and alien beauty, almost as if trapped between a dream and a nightmare.   These mountains are also the homelands for the Vesper. Their non-sentient cousins still flock here to this day.

Geography

Approximately 500 miles long and ranging from 30 to 200 miles across, the Feywilds are hilly and mountainous, with numerous small valleys. The taller of the mountain ranges in the South measures around 7000 to 7,500 feet tall on average; the Northern peaks are much shorter, usually around 5,000 feet above sea level. It would be reasonable to compare the Feywilds to the Appalachians on Earth. (if a little taller in places).   The feywilds exert their magic on the snow and mist that wrap around these mountains- the mists often shimmer with rainbows, and the snow ranges from white to pink to light lavender in coloration. Similarly, rock formations and even old buildings warp over time, oftentimes corkscrewing upwards.

Fauna & Flora

The flora and fauna here are unusual and striking. Flowers detach from their plants, floating in the air. Massive gnarled trees with purple-green leaves reach out in unique patterns, sometimes growing upwards or sideways ridiculously. Other trees glide on leafy membranes among the peaks, snapping up birds and whistling in the wind.   Bats swarm through the orchards and forests, parroting speech as they go. Strange crows, stretched out with enormous needle beaks, play tricks and pranks on passersby. Wolves with spider-like limbs prowl the underbrush, gibbering snippets of human speech. Rabbits like puffballs with enormous floppy ears jettison themselves into the air like bouncing rubber balls. Cats slip by like ghosts. Things don't die here like they do in most places. They just grow stranger.

Natural Resources

Feycider and feywood are valuable assets here- the hyper-diverse life can create very aesthetically appealing rainbow woods, and alcohol from the fruits here range from slightly unusual to wild (sometimes even fizzling and popping in one's mouth).
