Old Fastur

About 5 km northeast of Fastur lies the ruins of an ancient metropolis once known as Fastur and now called Old Fastur. Although clearly never as big as the City of Cartoons, it must have once housed hundreds of thousands of people. Now it is little more collection of collapsed and partially collapsed buildings, rubble, and junk...and one of the largest sources of pure, clean water in Taebur. Unfortunately, that water is almost completely inaccessible.   In the southern outskirts of the city, near the centre of one of the old suburbs, a large pool of fresh water floods several streets. The water probably comes from an underground spring, but no one has been able to reliably confirm this, as people who enter Fastur frequently don't come back out again. Those who do are usually running for their lives, and don't have the opportunity to study the pool or anything else in the city. A rare few do manage to bring some water out, and this has confirmed that the water is clean and drinkable. Unfortunately, the risk of obtaining it is just too great for it to be a viable water source.   Stories tell of rare and beautiful flowers that grow along the banks of the pool, out of cracks in the buildings or from between large blocks of stone or rubble. The flowers are said to have all kinds of healing properties, though there is little evidence to corroborate this.

Old Mother

Although Old Fastur is officially "uninhabited", the truth is there are many dangers living in the ruins, which is why so few who enter come back out. A lot of these are probably just gangs that control segments of the ruins. In all likelihood though, these gangs change frequently as members are killed off by the city's other dangers and the survivors move to other parts of the city or leave entirely.   There are worse dangers than gangs, however. Various creatures make their home in the rubble and collapsed buildings. There are few reliable accounts of just what kinds of creatures exist there, but they could be just about any kind of mutant animal that has wander in from either the desert to the north or the plains to the south.   Yet there is an even greater threat. Survivors of a journey into Old Fastur have often reported that the gangs and creatures in Old Fastur speak reverently of something they call "Old Mother" Beyond the name, however, there is little consistency in the stories of Old Mother. Some say she lives in catacombs beneath the city. Others say she lives in the hollowed-out remains of one of the tallest buildings and flies out (at times that vary) to hunt those living in the city. Still others say she is a shadowy, near-invislble being who sneaks up on people unawares and takes them. It is said that some of the gangs and creatures in the ruins worship Old Mother like some sort of god. Others see her as an abomination that must be appeased with sacrifices. Others just try to stay out of her way. Whatever their individual beliefs about her, all fear her, and what they call "Old Mother's embrace".   Of course, there's no real evidence that Old Mother even exists, and she may be just a name invoked to explain the actions of various different abominations residing in the city.
