Early History

Pelliny struggled greatly in its early history, caught between the mountains and the sea with powerful states to the south and the Vvulfjr to the north. The divided settlements of Pelliny like many nations fought within for many generations. The city of Pelliny emerged in this era as a small trading hub along a river flowing out to the Shattered Sea. This trading hub exchanged goods with Athera to the south and the other cities in the north. This influx of wealth built the city up over the following decades, slowly becoming a regional power. Rival cities moved quickly to conquer this rising power. They found this cities residents most stalwart in the defense of their city and lord. The Lord of Pelliny was a popular man amongst the people, having shared much of the growing wealth with the merchants and common folk. With this wealth Pelliny equiped the first of their Knights. These Knights were unlike anything the neighboring kingdoms had ever seen. The with lance and the most advanced armor in the region the mobile might of Pelliny held back these rivals for years before it came their time for conquest. With their boarders secured the army of Pelliny moved first against their largest rival, the city of _. This city stood down stream along the river near the banks of the Shattered Sea, with such postioning a drawn out siege would have taken years. The young army of Pelliny needed a clear and quick victory, and as such leveraged their mighty cavalry to its fullest affect. They drew the army of _ out from the walls, thinking that the Lord of Pelliny had only brought a corps of infantry the defenders marchered their larger force to the field. Meaning to intercept the forces of Pelliny before they reached the city they took what should have been good positions along the road. Yet this was a trap, the Knights had travelled days a head of the main army, and lay in weight. Taking first the baggage train before moving on to the rear of the line. With the timely arrival of Pelliny's infantry the battle was quickly won by this new type of soldier. Having won the field and devistated the army _ surrendered, and Pelliny had effectively double its territory in a matter of weeks. This moment was a proving ground for the fledgling kingdom, and the Lord was able to leverage this victory, and his wealth to form alliances with many neighboring lords. With allies and a large body of people the Lord of Pelliny quickly worked to secure all the lands of his neighbors. It was then that the legends of the wolfmen of the north caught his attention. Long dismissed by the rulers to the south as legend, the Lord heard tell of these beasts from the northern traders. Traders who maintained his supply of steel. Hearing stories of how these wolfmen would attack travellers and villages, the Lord of Pelliny offered his assistance. He was a shrewd leader, who sought to secure his source of iron, and to solidify his influence over the north. The few northern towns were desperate for aid, as food was scarce and the threat of attack was always presant. With baggage train loaded with food, and his army prepared the Lord marched off to the north...........

Demography and Population

The population of Pelliny is large with a high urban population, and many other small villages, farming communities, and towns scattered across the countryside. The large urban population of Pelliny is supported by large tracts of farmland that stretch across the souther end of the kingdom. Well divided farmsteds with rows of hedges and stone dividing property lines, that the roads wind between. There are several large cities, with the capital city of Pelliny being by far the largest. The cities themselves are densly populated and although sprawling are well laid out having shared in city planning with the Atherans. Much of the cities population resides behind the walls, however most cities are surrounded by large tracts of farmland and villages that but up to the edges of the walls further increasing the population of these urban centers. The more rural farming communities, and villages make up roughly half the population of Pelliny while taking up the vast majority of the nation's territory. This large farming base  provides a surplus of food which is traded over the mountains to Bleda-City and some to support the armies of Athera. This population is centered on centeral to southern Pelliny, with the population thining dramatically as you move north.    The north of Pelliny is far colder and snow is common for much of the year making agriculture difficult and ever increasing reliance on the south. This northern territory has but a few major settlements, which are set up to support the rich iron mines of the northern mountains. These mountains produce some of the highest quality iron in the world, and are one of the few places capable of producing Dark Iron. This industry supports the men of this region, and its relatively small population. Having only one major trade city in the north, the other villages are closer to the mines, and are higher up in the mountains.

Military

The military of Pelliny is famous across the world for the might of their cavalry. The Great Knights of Pelliny are a class of noble professional soldiers who some of the most advanced plate armor in the world. Although a main focus of the Army of Pelliny,  the Great Knights are only a small portion of the full might of Pelliny's army. There is also a large corps of light cavalry lancers, who are a class of semi-professional peseant soldiers who further fill out the Cavalry ranks of Pelliny. These ranks of cavalry are supported by formations of infantry, and crossbowman. Although the Cavalry makes up the power of Pelliny's line, the core of the army is made up of their infantry and foot archers. The infantry clad in heavy armor to protect them from arrow fire mostly wield two handed polearms. Using long pikes, or halbards to hold the enemy at bay. Fighting from Pike Blocks  the infantry or Pelliny advance slowly across the field under the cover of heavy crossbows. These crossbowman are also fairly heavily armored, with crossbows of high poundage capable of piercing armor. Like Athera, Pelliny maintains a large professional standing army. This professional army is made up of the noble knights who lead local forces, and enlisted lineman who serve as guardsmen during times of peace. This standing core of infantry is used to support the levied forces and tends to make up the center of the line. In tradtional battlelines the infantry formations engage the main enemy force and advance under the cover of the crossbowman. While the infantry hold the attention of the enemy line, the Great Knights cover the flanks and then exploit any openings in the enemy lines. Using the cavalry to drive the enemy from the field under the weight of a heavy cavalry charge, and then running down the routed soldiers with the supporting light cavalry. These tactics have proven effective against their most recent foes in Whitehelm where they were used to break the Kangar-Reed and the Eastern. During times of peace, the army of Pelliny trades out its battlefield weapons for those more suited to urban and enforcement situations. The long pikes traded out for shorter glaives, with blades that excel at cutting and are particularly effective against unarmored opponets. These glaives make for good crowd control weapons, and with shorter haft are far more manageable in the narrow corridors of Pelliny's cities. The guards as well often wear less armor, and trade their battlefield swords for falchions, or sideswords. These swords being more practical against unarmored or lightly armored bandits, and aprehending criminals.
