Personal history

Odrick's parents had died young, leaving him with his brother Javal Walker to raise and the dampest bit of land in the Crysanthemum Valley east of Malabre. Steam vents and skunk cabbage weren't attracting anyone other than groggy black bears at the start of spring.

When Javal was nearly old enough to be apprenticed, Odrick and Javal put up a rough fence and hung "Danger: Bears" signs on their land and began the long walk to the capital. There were Walker cousins in Libete and Odrick didn't think they'd turn away one of their own. Especially not a creative soul like Javal.

So the brothers walked the old cart road that followed the river westward. They stopped to chat with workers reinforcing the riverbank, maintaining the path for lumber to float down to the capital.  Odrick would wave his hat and Javal would shout, "Bright day!" They swapped supplies for food and stories for gossip. "Orc incursions. Nasty business," the brothers were told by one group. "Peace talks and trade," said the next group. It all sounded more exciting to the boys than mucking out the bog.

Odrick and Javal stopped in Malabre to see the sights and look for opportunities. They hired on with a caravan heading in the right direction and were put to work lifting crates and barrels and then minding the row of tethered goats. The wild-eyed black and white creatures had to be kept from tangling up, defended from preditors, and milked regularly. The newness and the few coins that lined their pockets made the tasks exciting and fun.

The capital of Libete was the oldest and most established city in Chalibeth, but still young compared to the tribes of humans to the north and the tribes of orcs to the west. Streets and public spaces were well cared for. Buildings were new and hung with fresh flowers. On hearing the brothers were orphans, locals gave the boys bread, cheese, and watered-down mead. No one in Libete needed to starve.

But the brothers' dusty and worn work clothes only gave them entry to the city at a certain level. They were expected to work hard and accept a meager wage. Odrick and Javal worked for three months to afford clothes and shoes that made Javal look like a young artist ready for more specialized work. Odrick shaved his brother's dreadlocks off to within a half-inch of his scalp, a look Javal would maintain for many years to come.

It still took time to seek out the Walker cousins, and it was nearly the Autumn Equinox before old matron Emmie Walker to a liking to the boys and set Javal up as an apprentice to her son Cameron.

Odrick returned to Crysanthemum Valley with some coin, a couple of goats, and a fine new shovel. Upon his return home, Odrick passed a sign that said, "Welcome to Mumbee." It felt like the start of something new for both the brothers.
