  (Adventure Day 139)
The Party were assaulting the Responders' ambush at Crue's Mark. Linda was lying on her back, choking, having been freshly shot by a light tank's main gun. Andy had been struck by many vicious laser blasts. The situation seemed grim. But Lex rushed to Linda's aid, delivering her a lifesaving Stimpak. Scipio rushed to Andy's aid, two plasma guns sending a hail of fire at his assailants. Dr. Patch looked at the Hoofer Light Tank plowing through the forest towards them. He loaded up his grenade launcher with an armour-piercing, dual-purpose grenade and fired.
The anti-vehicle round did its job, tearing through the armour plating of the assault vehicle. Patch loaded his break-action grenade launcher again and sent another munition into the tank, damaging it further. The Hoofer's top gunner and driver were shredded. The tank's gunner, surprised by the attack, jumped into the driver's seat, pushed the tank into reverse and retreated into the woods. By then, Linda was back up again. She drew her Gatling Laser and laid into the tank with a stream of energy bolts. One more grenade from Patch and the tank was ruined. With the main threat gone, Kay easily dispatched the last two Responders with her claws.
The enemies were defeated, but they could see smoke billowing out from inside the Hoofer. If the fire reached the munitions box of the machine, then the tank shells would all go off at once with a massive explosion. The party ran for cover, just in time to be clear of the tank's blast. It had been a hard-won fight, but the ambush point at Crue's Mark had been cleared, and now ordinary travelers could move down the highway without being robbed… at least by the Responders.
The exhausted Party searched through the remains of the Responders, finding the spoils of their various robberies. Kay gave Morag's body back to her, having killed enough "raiders" for the day. They decided to rest aboard the Ms. Man, keeping the airship afloat for safety. That night, as Patch drifted off to sleep, he remembered a day he had been called into the Gravestone Cathedral…
…It was 2300, and Patch had been free of Children of Atom captivity for about 10 years. He had set up a clinic just outside of Gravestone, treating mostly Ghouls and Super Mutants, and keeping out of the politics of the city. But Bishop Proton, leader of the Gravestone Cathedral religion, had sent a personal summons to the doctor. Not wanting to insult his neighbours and the greater ghoul community, he went to the Cathedral, just as he was bid.
There he was greeted by Bishop Proton and Chomper, his captain of the guard. Chomper immediately questioned why Patch chose to live on the outskirts of Gravestone, instead of living in one of the apartments of their holy nuclear silo. Patch explained respectfully that he was not a full member of the religion. Bishop Proton politely asked the doctor to reconsider joining, but the leader's words were always tinged with subtle manipulation.
Patch was then introduced to a ghoul named Nucleon, who the bishop was sure would be the next mayor of Gravestone. The Midwest Brotherhood of Steel's Gamma Town Charter required all member cities to keep a municipal government chosen by election. The Gravestone ghouls preferred their religious leadership but enjoyed the protection of the Midwest. This man Nucleon could be a valuable puppet for the Cathedral, so long as the new mayor could skim the city's coffers for his own enrichment.
But the matter at hand was that Bishop Proton had brokered a deal with the New California Republic for custom weapons to made for the Cathedral. These weapons would be fitted with Contaminators, device which imbued the bullets with radioactive power. The project was already in motion, but Proton asked Patch if he could oversee the schematics and give his professional opinion in order to improve these weapons. Dr. Patch Radam was hesitant to put this power into the hands of these religious zealots, but reluctantly agreed to give his help.
…As Patch fell asleep, he remembered the Devil's Voice revolver he had found that afternoon. The Gravestone ghouls had completed their projected, granting Contaminator weapons to their faithful. All done with the direct help of the NCR, who might be enemies now.
The Party awoke and had a quick breakfast. They had been warned by Leigh the salvager that the Responders were planning to assault Fort Wayne with some kind of "filth." They were growing this contagion at the old Adams Hospital. So, the group flew the Ms. Man to the ruin. There they found a group of armed humans, seeming to amble lazily around the area. When the Party landed, these humans greeted them. They were led by a woman named Yeager, who immediately saw Linda and Lex's sashes declaring that they were capos from The Rustlands and gave respect. Yeager said that they were free to salvage the hospital ruins, but that they were also salvaging. Their gang was not allowed to pick a fight, but out here in the wilds, there were no P.I.F. agents to know what happened to them, so this gang were not afraid to defend themselves.
A little bit of searching led Patch to discover a tank of brewing anthrax. These were Responders gangers bent on hurting the civilian population of Fort Wayne. A fight ensued, but it wasn't much of a battle. With no armour on their heads, these Responders were easy to decapitate for the inveterate Party.
With the gangsters gone, it was simple enough for Patch to burn the anthrax to death and nullify the biological weapon. Among the gangers' possessions, they found a note written by Ysidro, leader of all the Responders in this region. It read that Ysidro was waiting for the Hellcats' convention in Fort Wayne to end. When all of the Hellcats left, the Warlady of Fort Wayne, Nephelle, would be exhausted and overconfident. Ysidro and his gang could then assault Fort Wayne when they were weakest, replace Nephelle and petition Railmaster Bloodgrind to legitimize their rule. Instead of a wandering gang, they would have a town of their own, with a steady stream of taxes to maintain them, and the protection of P.I.F.
Railmaster Bloodgrind had already paid the Party to investigate the Hellcats' job fair in Fort Wayne. Nephelle the Warlady had called this grand event without any word to her boss. The plans of the Responders made the situation even more complicated. Nephelle would want to know of these plans, but the group didn't yet know if Nephelle was an ally or an enemy.
Here in the Rustlands it was schemes within schemes, all revolving around money. The group flew into Fort Wayne, preparing for the Byzantine situation ahead…
