Revered Inquisition

Hunters of Maledict

Structure

Titles within the Inquisition start with Inquisitor then followup with their position to note their rank. For example, Arnsley Dorian, Inquisitor Captain. Though such titles are based off the military’s, they do not necessarily function as an army. Although, they do train akin to military discipline.

Martial

The Martial is the leader of the Inquisition. It is their duty to work with their generals to oversee the that the Kingdom is free from Maledict’s influence. Like the Pontiff, they do not stay in one province and instead move around to see where their aid is needed most.

General

The general presides over the wellbeing of an entire province as their specialty, calling upon captains where help is needed most if they need more hands.

Captain

Captains tend to move around a lot through the Kingdom of Ardentry. They often pickup specialties in their trade that generals tend to seek out. Some may specialize in fighting corrupted such as roden and orcs. Some may specialize in combating vicians or their influence in general.

Sergeant

Sergeants act more as trainers or specialists within a town or region to prepare privates. Otherwise, they follow alongside an Inquisitor Captain on a mission as support.

Private

Privates are tasked with preparations in combating corrupted, such as orcs and roden, before they start training to combat vicians. Once they are prepared, they follow alongside sergeants or captains on their missions to help acquire experience.

Culture

Devotion

Inquisitors know the cruelties that vicians can inflict. They know what evil they can bring. As a result, they often cling with zeal to what good the Reverie and caels instill as a cure.

Public Agenda

Hunt Down Maledict’s Influence

Vicians awakened the selfish desires of mortals. Through their extermination, only then can the Kingdom of Ardentry ever return to the peace of the Divine Era.

Instill Hope of the Reverie

As a branch of the Reverie, Inquisitors are tasked with upholding those ideals wherever they go. Should Maledict’s influence be uprooted from a settlement, the Reverie’s must be its replacement lest they fall back, or even continue, their wicked ways.

History

The Divine Era was a tranquil 1000 years of peace. It was the Cult of Maledict that ruined everything through their temptations and awakening of mortal selfishness. In the aftermath of the Incursion, the King established the Inquisition as specialists of rooting out Maledict’s influence so that there could be a return to those peaceful days. They were even given powers to convict and sentence criminals as they saw fit.

The Inqusition is meant to be ruthless only to Maledians. To catch fellow faithful innocents is to denigrate everything that the Inquisition stands for. A new age was upon us all and, I will admit, we all did things to desperately bring back the old life many knew before the Incursion.

— Arnsley Dorian, Inquisitor Captain

People were scared and desperate of the changes Maledict caused to daily life. One now had to second guess if the kind children were honest in needing food and not lying to exploit your kindness. These matters only spooked the Inquisition to further dig deeper and ensure normalcy returned.

The Inquisition had an easy time, at first, finding and punishing members of Maledict within the Kingdom. The troubles didn’t start until what was once obviously evil became obscured amidst what was good. Soon, abuses of power escalated further in desperation to punish not only that which is greatly heretical, but also to the point of mundane sin at some points.

Years later after the people were growing restless, King Evendur Dundragon ascended to the throne. He recognized that the Inquisition is made up of specialists in hunting down Maledict but their many instances of harassments and rumors of torture meant he had to do something. So, Evendur decreed that the Inquisition would stay but any charges they bring must go through the Crown first. A new age was upon the Kingdom and it was time to accept that fact.

Political Influence & Intrigue

The Inquisition lost its ability to prosecute citizens without the crown’s permission due to the former ruler Evendur Dundragon. The inquisitors had abused their privileges over mild offenses before and the scars run deep for the long-living races especially.

In the current period, some dukes and magistrates are uneasy to use the Inquisition as investigators into a trial for fear of some form of prejudice or bias against a defendant. However, they are still called upon as specialists should clear influence or threat of Maledict be present.

Good only prevails when evil is confronted.
