Magical Mutation

Condition

Causes

Magical Mutations, occur when a spell or curse permanently or semi-permanently alters the way the body or mind functions. They are not genetic mutations, thus are typically not able to be passed on to offspring. The exceptions are curses that a spread through blood like Lycanthropy, or through some other form of physical interaction.   Most often, magical mutations are caused purely by magic, most commonly Transformation, Elemental, or Dark Magic as those schools are the most likely to have physical effects on the body. Illusion magic can also alter the brain and behaviors. Mana Poisoning can also trigger these kinds of mutations.

Symptoms

These are most commonly recognized my physical abnormalities that don't typically appear normally in that species. This could range from more subtle changes like new powers or senses, to more obvious changes, like gills, tails, horns, extra eyes, skin color changes, changes in size or body type, new appendages, etc, etc.   Some changes can be desirable, while others can cause a hindrance in a persons life. In the case of curses, these changes are typically negative.

Treatment

Magical mutations can sometimes be removed with a little effort. Sometimes it's as simply as undoing or breaking a curse, where other times it's more complicated, requiring more magic to try and undo the alterations manually. This needs to be done carefully as it poses the risk of causing more harm. There are times where a spell is so difficult to undo that they simply can't be with out years of work, often forcing the afflicted to deal with these mutations for the rest of their lives.

History & Cultural Perception

Curses and people effected by them are as old as magic itself. People with magical mutations have had a history of causing trouble for people, and coupled with the often times monstrous appearance they cause, those who have suffered these kinds of mutations are often ostracized from and live away from society.   During the magical renaissance when the in depth study of magic became more widespread, so did the knowledge on how curses and mutations work, and the process to fix them. People in the magic community tend to be more understanding of the plight of the cursed than the general public do.   Over time some magical mutations became so common that entire species and sub-species were born from them, such as centaurs, werewolves, dank elves and shades.
