Hollow Scout Profession in Ethnis | World Anvil

Hollow Scout

Hollow Scouts have their soul removed as a precaution before being dispatched to regions with Soulblight, or to battlefields involving Auric Mindbreakers.

While there are tactical advantages and disadvantages to being Hollow, it began as a ritual means for Malisyk scouts to safekeep their souls while they journeyed into the Marianyan Territories. Should the scout survive, their soul would be reconsecrated into their bodies. Should the scout perish, their souls were fed to their captive god, Murder — a high honor.

An iteration of this profession exists in modern times, with the same name, but it is

Some hold Hollows in poor regard due to a negative association to prisoners and other unwanteds.

Abilities

Hollows are immune to Auric spells and invisible to Auric and Meta Divination.

Without a soul, Hollows may not cast spells of their own, nor use items which require meta to trigger.

Hollows must wear a Whispering Shroud to prevent Naissance leading to Auric Feedback.

Hollows are less resistant to magical damage without a Soul to armor them.

The Ritual

It takes a vivid spirit to become a Hollow, a being of such resolve that the Soul may vacate the Animal, and the body may determine to return to its soul.

Tools of the Trade

Nazh Syk'k, the First Hollows

During the tumultuous Sazashi Revolution, Khytask devised a plan to infiltrate the haunted Valley of the Revenant and ambush the Monolithic Contingent of the Procession, and strike a decisive blow against them.

We will shed our very souls.

By divesting themselves of these inherent identifiers, they might slip past soul-seeking gaze of the Revenant and could bide their time undetected, lying in wait for the Monolithic Contingent.

The audacious plan succeeded. Elusive to the Revenant's senses, Khytask and his legion patiently awaited the opportune moment to strike. When the Monolithic Contingent ventured into the Valley, they were met with an unanticipated and devastating ambush.

It was this awe-inspiring and almost mythical event that bestowed the Nasyk with their well-earned namesake. To be known as Nazh Syk'k, an ancient and revered term, was to be recognized as one of the Hollow People—the valiant souls who had dared to relinquish a fundamental aspect of their identity to achieve an extraordinary goal.

Even after the Sazashi Revolution had passed into history, the legend of Khytask and the Hollow People continued to echo throughout the annals of time. Their audacity, resourcefulness, and unity against insurmountable odds served as an enduring inspiration to generations that followed. To this day, the Nasyk proudly bear the mantle of the Hollow People, a symbol of courage and ingenuity that remains etched in the hearts of their people.
