Glistering Gabriel

Written by Ademal

The Sommelier of Sorrow. The Angel of Angst. The answer to all your joys.

Gabriel was once an Angel stationed at The Crucible before he was excommunicated from The Church of The Somnolent for consorting with The House of Sorrows to obtain Glisterwax—a potent form of processed Selschaeus used in torture.

The Sorrows adopted him, grooming him to become a House Father. He set up shop in a new Syndicate world and built a family there of rejected immigrants and indigent workers. Under the cover of a church he built a brewery to make Glistering Champagne, which has Glisterwax lining the bottom of the bottle and which causes the drinker to enter various states of romantic sorrow. Too much of it can cause The Muse's Whisper or Soul Sickness.

Brutal Interrogations

In their effort to keep track of where the Syndicate was looking for the Index, the Somnacy enstated psychic interrogators extract information from prisoners. Gabriel, who already had esteem and rank from the campaign so far, applied for the team and was an easy shoe-in for the job. He served under Angels, but in their wisdom they listened to his suggestions, and ultimately let him have a shot at it.

He was a natural at crafting hellish dreamscapes to interrogate Syndicate soldiers in, and was able to produce heaps of verifiable information. The common concern of torture is that a subject may lie to be free of their torment, but Gabriel proved adept at determining which memories being shown to him were real, and which were fabrication. In his hands it was not a matter of if someone told the truth, but when.

It was during this time that Gabriel Transcended, and was thus given the rank of Angel of Truth.

Duke of Hell

Word of Gabriel's methods and success crawled up the chain of command. He was singled out to train others, but nobody could match his 100% success rate. This drew the attention of the Somnolent who, after long conversations and testing to test the absolution of Gabriel's faith, enstated him as the Duke of Hell—the previously lawless High Crucible.

He was to monitor Hell, and was allowed to construct his own smaller hells to interrogate enemies of the state.

Gabriel trained many, and his pupils trained many more. But none had his mind for it. The longest any other Angel could stomach to serve was a decade, but Gabriel ruled hell, tirelessly, for hundreds of years. Anyone who came under his charge that their thoughts unwound and their secrets laid bare.

Glistering Champagne

Glistering Champagne is a champagne made in The Garden of Earthly Delights. It is designed by Gabriel and stored in specialized bottles created by Kvarlo the Weird. They are universally illegal.

The key ingredient is a thin layer of refined Glisterwax on the bottom of the bottle. It's not enough outright to damage the drinker, but induces mild Soul Sickness.

Champs-Élysées

The choice drink of poets, Champs-Élysées, induces a pleasant state of artistic melancholy. A consistent dose can induce Muse's Whisper.

Mont Saint-Michel

A drink for remembering things which were and things which you wish were. Saudade in a bottle, complete with a chance of lingering Lovesickness.
