Allesend

Note: much of the contents of this article are out of date as of August 12, 459 AE, the date of the Awakening.   Allesend is a nation in central Allethra, and is the reformed remnant of the Allesend Empire, which was dissolved after the Independence War. It is currently jointly ruled by a coalition of an Emperor who is a direct descendant of God-Emperor Alles-Taluus and an elected Prime Minister, who both serve in the capital city of Allesar.   After the collapse of the Empire and the Treaty of Celestina, Allesend fell into a civil war which lasted for a bitter fifty years. At the end of it, the new government emerged, but the country was left ravaged by close to a century of constant war.   Much of Allesend today remains uninhabited. Ghost towns scatter the highways, abandoned by their nobility and peasantry alike.

Geography

Most of Allesend is rugged hillands. Here, farmers grow olives, grapes, avocados, artichokes, mustard, and a variety of grains. The Sea of Uctharar covers its northern border, where most of its cities lie. The southernmost stretch of the Lumwald reaches into Allesend. The Harkuldir Mountains are technically within the borders of Allesend, though the dwarves that live beneath the range state that the nation's claims end where the sky ends.

Structure

Allesend is ruled by two entities: a descendant of Alles-Taluus who serves as Emperor and speaks for the nobility, and a parliament who is elected by and represents the rest of the population. A Prime Minister is chosen from the parliament to serve for as long as a coalition party holds a majority.   The current Emperor is Magno Taluus, and the current Prime Minister is Elvyra de Ascolia.

History

In 320 AE, under the Treaty of Celestina, the Allesend Empire was to reorganize itself into a single nation. The nobility, concerned that the Holy Council would manipulate the current Emperor into folly, rose up and began a bloody civil war which would last until 333 AE. During that time, hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, entire cities were destroyed, and the Holy Council were executed on the steps of the Imperial Palace.   Exhausted by fighting, the two sides capitulated to one another, coming together to draft a new government that would give both sides equal power. The Emperor was allowed to remain in power, but a Parliament led by a Prime Minister was elected from amongst the people.   Seventeen years later in 350 AE, commoners dissatisfied with the little power they held in Allesend's new government rose up against the nobility, siezing the Imperial Palace and several noble castles across the country. With the country's leadership held at knifepoint, voting rights of ordinary citizens was guaranteed in the cities across the nation.   The following 100 years have been spent recovering from the three back-to-back conflicts. No longer the power it used to be, Allesend's main use to the rest of the world came from its remaining highways and infrastructure. Capitalizing on this, Allesend controls land trade in Allethra by charging merchants to travel along its desolate - but safe - stretches of roads.   When the Third Moon disappeared in 452 AE, Allesar was the site of a massive citizen uprising, believing that God-Emperor Taluus was casting judgment upon the newly-ascended Emperor Magno Taluus. Though the riots were quelled, a new political party was formed in the form of the Populist Party, staunchly and vocally anti-Imperial. The foundation of the government has broken yet again, and many are worried about yet another civil war.
