Independence War

The Independence War was a military conflict covering the whole continent of Allethra. It led to the fall of the Allesend Empire and the creation of the independent nations Faloriand, Edrana, Ithon, and Barisea; and the restructuring of the Empire into the state of Allesend.   Notably, the nations of Celestina and Harkuldir, independent nations of their own, remained neutral in the conflict.

The Conflict

Prelude

The roots of the Independence War began with the death of God-Emperor Alles-Taluus in 153 AE. Faith in the Allesend Empire began to wane as the Holy Council took control, particularly in Faloriand.   As time went on and the Empire became less and less centralized, so too did the state religion. Beginning in 285 AE, the Falorian belief in an Unseen God to whom Alles-Taluus was but a servant spread like wildfire across the country. The Holy Council sent inquisitions to crush the upstart faith, further instilling anger against the Empire.   In 299 AE, a magical plague swept through Edrana. The Empire quarantined the entire region for two full years. At the time, Edrana was the largest exporter of grain and other produce to the rest of the Empire, and in its absence many parts of the Empire saw decreased food supplies. Faloriand claimed that the famine was a punishment for the Holy Council's corruption.

Falorian Independence

On 15 November, 302 AE, the first Archbishop of the Church of the Unseen God was named in Erminster. With this new ascension, Faloriand declared its independence from the Empire. Over the next year, Imperial forces were slowly pushed out of the Falorian capital city. When the battle was over, Erminster stood as an example to the rest of the world that the Empire was not infallible.

Edrana Joins the War

When Edrana's borders were reopened in 301 AE, the Empire immediately put the Edranites to work to renew the produce trade. This led to overworking of the reduced population as many people were pressed into farming or shipping duties. In 308 AE, workers' unions rose up against the Empire, quickly driving out the minimal Imperial presence and securing their lands. Their newly crowned Queen immediately rose an army to protect their northern border.   Edrana met with Faloriand to create a Unified Front against the tyranny of the Empire, and together waged war to free Faloriand from Imperial control. The fighting in Faloriand lasted until 318 AE until finally the Empire was driven out of Falorian ancestral lands. During this time, Ithonian adventurers lent their skills as small commando units and scouts.

The End of the War

Barisea joined the Unified Front in 318 AE, creating a third theatre of war for the Empire to fight upon. Already battered and beaten, the Empire deployed its largest surviving army, Imperial Legion IV, to the southern Alln city of Corlesca. Edrana had pushed their borders far to the north and were encroaching upon the city. Reinforced by a fresh Falorian army, the Edranite army met Imperial Legion IV in the fields just south of the city in open battle. The conflict lasted three days until a small force of Ithonians arrived to flank Legion IV. The Imperial army was quickly surrounded, and in the end the Unified Front had captured over 20,000 soldiers and 1,000 officers.   Their military structure collapsed, the Allesend Empire met with delegations from the other nations in neutral Celestina to bargain for the prisoners' release. Ultimately, the conflict would end here with the Treaty of Celestina, which granted independence to the four nations and ended the Allesend Empire.
