Allesend Empire

The Allesend Empire was a continent-spanning empire founded by God-Emperor Alles-Taluus in 1 AE. After a long war waged against the nations of Allethra, the Allesend Empire subjugated every corner of the continent by 3 AE. Its capital was Allenar, built on the coast of the Bay of Uctharar. The previously conquered nations became states of the Empire.   The Empire was known for its highly effective bureaucracy, advances in technology and magical research, calendar restructure, progressive multicultural policies, and infrastructure.   God-Emperor Alles-Taluus ruled the Empire from its formation until his death in 153 AE. Afterwards, the Empire was ruled by the Holy Council, who claimed to speak for Alles-Taluus from beyond the grave. During this period, Allenar's control over the states waned, eventually leading to Faloriand's declaration of independence and, shortly after, the fracturing of the Empire in 320 AE.

Structure

In the Early Empire, God-Emperor Alles-Taluus ruled as the head of the empire. He was advised by the Holy Council, who distributed his will to governors and other officials.   The states of the Empire were made up of the former nations conquered in its creation. During the Early Empire, these states were left to effectively self-govern, with only a slight amount of oversight from Allenar. After the God-Emperor's death, the Holy Council took a much more active role in ruling the states.

Culture

When the Empire formed, citizens in conquered states were allowed to continue their traditions. With the creation of highways, these traditions spread and mixed throughout the Empire, resulting in a melting pot of culture.   The Empire encouraged education throughout its domain, and a large portion of the population was elevated through these edicts. Part of this education included patriotism towards the Empire as a whole, emphasizing a need for unity and cohesion over the individual.   As a religious institution, the only freedom that was denied citizens was the practice of religious beliefs. Everyone was required to worship and honor the God-Emperor. Past beliefs were outlawed under the penalty of imprisonment or execution. Nevertheless, traditional religions were sustained in secret, though their numbers were diminished significantly.

History

God-Emperor Alles-Taluus was born as Taluus in 25 BE to a poor family in Allesar. He joined the military when he was young, and his burgeoning magical talents were recognized. As he rose through the ranks, mages were awed by his raw power and strength. Eventually, at only the age of 25, Taluus claimed to have received a vision from the god Alles-Kalmar, who named Taluus as a spark of his divinity and charged him with uniting all people. The Allesend Senate named him Alles-Taluus and installed him as the nation's God-Emperor.   In 1 AE, Alles-Taluus laid claim to all lands in Allethra and began his campaign of conquering the continent. Despite being outnumbered, Allesend's central location and its highly trained army swept the lands. By 3 AE, every nation had been conquered and brought under the control of the new Empire.   For the next 150 years, the Empire flourished. Advances were made in practically every field: academic, arcane, and artistic alike. Allenar became the center of culture and trade in the Empire.   In 115 AE, a small army from Morstal landed on what is now Hiladhel's northern shores. Alles-Taluus himself led the repelling action, annihilating the invading force. This was the last time the God-Emperor would leave the capital.   Alles-Taluus died suddenly in 153 AE. After a brief period of unrest, his Holy Council of advisors took control of the Empire, claiming to speak in his voice from beyond the grave. Many theories exist about Alles-Taluus' death; the leading idea is that he was betrayed and assassinated by his own council, but no proof was ever discovered.   In 299 AE, a magical plague swept through the southern state of Edrana. The Empire instituted a quarantine of the entire region. However, Edrana had been the primary food supplier for the rest of the Empire, and food shortages began to weaken the Empire's control over its other states.   The Holy Council ruled until 302 AE, when the former nation of Faloriand declared independence. The high priests in the nation claimed that the Holy Council did not speak for the God-Emperor, and that he had died due to rampant sin. As the Empire fought to regain control, its other states declared their independence. These wars lasted until 320 AE, when finally the Treaty of Celestina was signed, officially ending the Empire and returning sovereign control to its former states.
