Personal history
At the time of The Cataclysm, Alem was living on the Bermuda island where magic was tethered and was freed by the tectonic activity of the time. Not much is known about his life prior to The Cataclysm, but it's suspected that he had been around since long before the tether was put in place.
Following The Cataclysm, Alem entered Concordia (still known as The United States, at the time) and selected a few Cataclysm survivors as "The Elect" to manage the sudden influx of magic and magical creatures. Some were selected due to a dormant gene to bear magic powers, and they were known as the first Potent.
Alem kept close tabs on The Elect through the years, monitoring their process and methods and stepping in at times from the shadows to interfere as he saw fit. At the same time, he was scoping out the ripe political climate of Concordia and forming a plan to take control. He left politics to their own devices (mostly) for the first few dozen years, working to acclimate to this new culture, learn about the people, and build a life for himself before he dove into the spotlight. He took several lovers in that time, including a woman he proposed to before ducking out of the arrangement. He also focused on his education, learning all he could about the technological advancements he'd missed and considering new ways to use them.
In 2315, using his permanent young looks to pass as a teenager, Alem entered the ranks of The Elect to help them with a "magical" problem they couldn't handle on their own. Though Alem had intended to use the mission as an opportunity to get close to Madison Thompson, the golden Elect of the era, he ended up beginning a relationship with Kaitlyn Walker instead. When The Elect grew suspicious of Alem, he escaped before they could do anything to him and Kaitlyn vanished with him.
Several years later, Alem reemerged, this time in politics. He began as mayor of Newbridge in 2391 and developed a shining reputation (though he was also known to be a playboy). From there, he moved up to governor of Newbridge State, where he maintained his reputation as a generous donor to charities, excellent representative of the people, brilliant spokesperson, and genius politician. He beckoned Newbridge State into a great deal of prosperity, all the while gaining the people's approval and manipulating them toward his own desires.
In 2415, Alem set his sights even higher and ran for president. Given his track record in Newbridge State, he won by a landslide and was welcomed into office with open arms. He signed a deal with Grantech around the same time, which gave the government near-ownership of the company and granted Alem full access to its projects and near-control of its funding. He began Project Eclipse almost immediately, having seen the impact of a recent solar eclipse on magical levels and the resulting natural Potent and wishing to manipulate that power to his own purposes, with the aid of the magnificent technological advances since his time tethered to Bermuda.
In 2422, Alem set his sights on the then-hacker Harper Moreau, who would eventually come to be his employee at Grantech and later his personal assistant and publicist. They had a lengthy affair, which produced a son: Zach Johnson.
