Kingdom of Alteria

To win military victories, one only needs a disciplined army, a general of incredible skill, or technology. The Alterian forces have all three.

Structure

Social Structure in Alteria

The hierarchy in the Kingdom of Alteria is rather rigid in structure. Moving from class to class is extremely difficult to do. There are three classes or castes in Alteria and intermarrying or changing of castes is prohibited. The lowest class of people are the workers. This includes the rural farmers and all the way up to most of the city's merchants. The second caste of people in Alteria are the nobles. These range from rural landowners to the lesser nobles in the city. The upper caste is of the House of Lords. These nobles are at the top and are the elites in society.   Depending on one's caste there are different titles awarded based on personal wealth and influence. the lowest class of workers does not have any titles and largely stays separate from the structure of the upper castes. Despite being poor and working on land that isn't their own they are largely free to make their own choices in life. 90% of the population of Alteria is in this class. They are the farmers, blacksmiths, merchants, entertainers, and other common people.

Titles among the Lesser nobility

Baron
The lowest title in Alteria is that of Baron . This title is given to the most rural and least wealthy of members in the second caste. As a baron a person owns an estate in the country and is responsible form a small village. They are in charge of enforcing the peace in their territory as well as appointing guards and constables. The baron reports to the local Count.
Count
A count is responsible for a group of villages in a region. Any areas that fall outside of an individual baron's control fall under the Count's ruling.
Lords
In the Capital of Alteria the second caste contains fewer lesser nobles and more of the wealthy merchant class. They have a minor seat in government in the House of commons. They are often called lords as a generic title.

Titles Among the Nobility

Duke
Above the Count is the rank of Duke. A person at this rank is in charge of an entire region. They are in charge of collecting taxes, keeping the peace, and providing military training and support for the king. There are few Duke's in the Kingdom of Alteria but they wield great power. From among them the Prime Minister is chosen and the rest meet together as the House of Lords.
King
At the top is the King . The king holds power over the entire country but is beholden to the House of Lords. Power is split between the lords of the realm and the king.

Regions of Alteria

The kingdom of Alteria is a large country split into smaller regions. These regions are each ruled by a duke who reports to the king in Highmark .

Highmark is a small region containing the capital city and the nearby surrounding farmlands. It is ruled by the king directly and is separate from the other duchies.

Northwood

Similar to Harkenvale, the region of the Northwood is a frontier with very few cities or towns. One main fortress, The Lichenkeep, stands along the river. This region lies just north of the capital and goes up all the way into the nearby mountains.

Quendar

A region on the northern border of the country. Its main city is Port Temper. In years prior Port Temper was the largest port that sent men and materials to Sozar during its colonization. During the rebellion, it was the duke of Quendar who formulated the army to attack the dwarves.

Restonia

Restonia is ruled by the Duchess Annabelle Hawthorne . Considered the breadbasket of Alteria, Restonia grows the majority of crops and exports them to other regions. The two major cities are Rivenlock and Southerscot.

Public Agenda

The Kingdom of Alteria plans on unifying the whole of Westreach so that it can reform The Westreach Federation. The support for this agenda has waned over the years and currently most of the populous is calling for an end to wartime activities and a push towards economic and technological growth.

History

After the fall of the The Westreach Federation , there was chaos among the general populous. Warlords popped up and began warring for territory. Eventually Xavier Malestrum solidified his control over the city of Highmark and established the new Kingdom of Alteria. As the previous Federation had relied heavily upon mages who had in turn drove the region into ruin, Xavier decided to ban all practices of magic in his Kingdom. As the years progressed anti-magical fervor drove Alteria to war with the Magocracy of Vestonia. Though the war had a short period of time where support lessened during the rein of the late Quincy Thessleman, under queen Asche the war effort has been reignited. Since the events of The End of an Era, Alteria has grown more and more closed off and militaristic. Queen Asche has focused her efforts on the invention of new technologies to aid in the war effort. With the loss of Fjoream from Sozar the queen and her scientists have begun resorting to more horrific modes of making war including a mechanized steam powered carriage capable of firing large rounds at enemy lines and numerous thrown incendiary or noxious fume devices. It has also been during this time that anti-arcane sentiment as has ramped up. Whereas previously anti magic sentiment made magic taboo but not illegal Queen Asche has begun rounding up known users of magic and locking them away in camps.

Demography and Population

The majority of the population of Alteria lies in its cities. Recently the kingdom has been pushing for more of its citizens to live in the countryside to improve food production. While the standard of living for the wealthy has increased dramatically, lately the poor are suffering from an incredibly high mortality rate among the newly built factories.

Territories

A small settlement on the isle of Sozar was created to try and colonize the island. There have been rising conflicts as the Alterians face off againts the Snow Dwarves who have built their own society upon the island. this ended in the Sozarian rebellion where the dwarves finally were able to eject the Alterians from their lands. Sozar is rich in Fjoream, a material with anti-magical properties which caused the Alterians to desire it greatly.

Military

Alteria has a full standing army. The army is comprised of levies from each region and are led by generals appointed by the king. The king has his own elite levy taken from the region of Highmark. Fighting againts the mages of Vestonia has changed the way Alterians do warfare. Rather than large regimented lines of soldiers charging towards the enemy the Alterians have broken their levies into small squads who can act quasi-independently of each other. Each squad is led by a sergeant and contains a scout, sapper, heavy, and shock troop. Each sergeant reports to a Captain who is responsible for around four squads. The captains then report directly to the field commander or the general.

Technological Level

The kingdom of Alteria has entered the beginnings of an industrial revolution. Due to the anti-magic sentiment among the people the government put plans to research ways of improving their technology, especially with regards to movement. Steam power is the newest technology but this has brought about a few automatons and as such certain goods are now easier to come by. The use of firearms has also begun to be more common. The entire Alterian military is trained in the use of both sidearms and longarms. While most firearms are single shot there have been some recent inventions of sidearms that can be loaded with up to 6 rounds.

Religion

The Kingdom of Alteria recognizes all of the main 18 gods common to the cultures of Westreach . The The Golden Dawn however holds the prominent position within the country as its main religion. Benevolent Triarch Foley holds great political power within the city of Highmark. the other two Triarchs live in other cities in Westreach. One in Hightower and the other in Clearwater .

Foreign Relations

Alteria has diplomatic relations with three main countries. That of the city-states of Clearwater and Boshton, and the Magocracy of Vestonia . Alteria and Clearwater enjoy many trade agreements and the flow of both people and information is high. The relationship is more neutral between ALteria and Boshton due to events during the Sozarian rebellion. The relationship with Vestonia on the other hand is poor if not hostile. The two countries have been at constant war or border skirmishes for the past century.
