Highmark

Demographics

The population of Highmark is varied. While the majority of the city is Humans , all races can be found in some numbers within the city. Dwarves make up the second largest minority group in the city followed by a smaller number of Feravir . Though present, there are very few Elves , Soul Forged , or Anthosaurs

Government

Highmark stands as the capital city of the Kingdom of Alteria. At the highest part of the city lies the Queen's palace and the heart of her kingdom. While she technically riles the city directly the title of Grand Mayor has been created to be her representative ruler for the city. The grand mayor is in charge of keeping the city running and making sure all flows smoothly in the Queen's city.

Industry & Trade

Highmark is the pinnacle of technology and industry. It ranks as one the largest cities on the continent. Built on trade coming up from the Tolen River, Highmark relies heavily on other cities for food and supplies. While the surrounding area does support some agriculture the majority of the capital region is very industrialized. Factories rather than farms dot the surrounding landscape. Most of the products of Alteria are produced in Highmark. While it can be a lovely place to visit, it is often clouded by a thick smog from all of the nearby factories.

Infrastructure

Highmark was built along a river with the city going up along the sloping hillside to the north. The city has been tiered off into districts with the upper districts locked off to the common people. Many factories can be found along the coast and the lower districts. The city itself has five districts. They are not assigned to any particular industry but for the most part the higher up the city you go the nicer it becomes. Most citizens of the city think of the city as having two districts. This is due to the fact that the upper two districts are built over the land itself on vast towers. They tower over the land and even above the low hanging industrial smog. These districts are closed off from the common people and are available only to government workers and foreign dignitaries.

Travel Within the City

There are a few ways to travel between the different districts. The more leisurely are available only for the richer citizens. The most common way of travel in the cities is by the various network of roads. These are paved with smooth stones or bricks and can one can either walk or hire a carriage or horse to take them up to the upper districts. The second way one might travel is by gondola. These are three main lines that each have stops at each of the districts. Middle class citizens are those who have work in another district will usually take this form of transportation. The final way to travel between the districts is by elevator. These are steam powered and are available only for the most elite.

Travel into or out of the City

Highmark has one large main shipping port at the lowest district of the city. There is a large train hub on the third district as well for those traveling by land.

History

Highmark stands as the ancient capital of the The Westreach Federation. After the federation's collapse, it eventually became the center of power for the warlord who became the first king of Alteria. since then it has remained the capital for the Alterian Kingdom.   Built along the northern edge of lake Patience between the Tolen and Burgon rivers, Highmark is positioned near the center of the region of Westreach with easy access to the coast or further inland. It is also surrounded on all sides by lush fields of rolling hills. The sloping hill it was built on allows for the city to have some measure of defense from attackers while also giving the rulers a beautiful view of the region. Sadly in recent years this view has become tarnished by the ever present smoke from the factories.

Geography

The city lies on a small plain along the coast of Lake Patience. Running on either side of the city into the lake are the Haven river to the south and the north section of the Tolen River to the north.
