Altest

Nothing like the the cold winds, the dry salty air, and the ramshackle huts to make you miss the bureaucracy of the mainland
— Altestian merchant

Demographics

While some trading is done with other nations the colony of Altest is almost entirely Alterian; the majority of which are humans. Before the uprising there was a small population of Snow Dwarves in the city as traders and hired swords.

Defences

Altest contains a simple motte and bailey castle with a small stone wall surrounding the city proper.

Infrastructure

Despite Alteria's technological advancements there has been little in the way of innovation in Altest. While once a thriving port town the current colony is a mere shadow of its former self. The only upkeep done is used on the road to Ravndal and the mines. Trade runs quickly through the port as that is really the only part of the town still up and running.
Altest is the fastest port in Alteria cause nobody wants to stay any longer than they have to
— Anonymous Alterian Sailor

History

Altest began as a small port village for the Kingdom of Alteria when they first landed and discovered the isle of Sozar. When Fjoream was discovered further inland in the The Torn Mountains, the port quickly expanded as interest in the metal's magically resistant properties began a full scale colonization effort into the region. The town saw an influx on miners and craftsmen but also soldiers as the Alterians began forcibly pushing the Sozarian dwarves from their homelands. Eventually as the dwarves retreated to the center of the continent much of Altest's population traveled further inland to take the old Dwarven city of Ravndal. This left Altest to shrink down to a mere trading port connecting Sozar with the mainland. Currently the city has grown in size massively with the war between the Sozarian dwarves and the Kingdom of Alteria. Altest has become the staging area for all troops regiments arriving from the mainland and with these troops come a host of others.

Architecture

Most of the buildings were made using clay bricks or stone as there are very few trees to allow for timber construction.

Geography

Altest was built along the southern coast of the Arctic continent of Sozar. Much of the surrounding land is flat rocky land filled with crags and salt marshes. The land is barren and very few species of vegetation can survive and even fewer thrive in the harsh environment. Luckily for its inhabitants the surrounding ocean waters have an abundance of fish.   The Forkal River runs through Altest providing a source of fresh water although this mighty river freezes over during the cold winter months.

Natural Resources

Saltwater fish from the surrounding ocean and salt from the salt marshes are the main resources available to Altest. However, As Altest is the main port town for the Alterian presence on Sozar much of the island's natural resources travel through the colony on their way back to the mainland. This includes iron, silver and other metals from the various inland mountain ranges and the precious metal Fjoream . The main reason for the Alterian colonies on Sozar.
