Sene River

This river waters the eastern edges of the Shamsi Desert, creating lush river valleys throughout the Dar Emirates. Sene runs for 675 mi (1,086 km). In fact, it is large enough to have three smaller tributaries. It's headwaters originate in the tropical forest south of Dar, flowing northeast and finding its way to Musi Kongo. The Sene River acts as the border between this rainforest, the Shamsi Desert and Kasar Wuta before emptying into the sea. The river was originally named after the main god of the Serer.   The river branches many times along its journey, its two main branches eventually rejoining, embracing a strip of land regarded as an island, Xonq Island. Xonq is a center of local trade, a massive marketplace connecting the smaller communities Dar to the trade routes spanning the Shamsi Desert, which end at Tin Buqt along the banks of the Oya Kwara River to their west. Because of the wealth of this fertile region and because this island is their center of trade, Xonq is sometimes called the "island of ivory" or the entire Sene River the "river of gold". This island was once infamous for its abundance of ivory and gold, sparking many a tall tale and peaking the curiosity of many a doomed treasure hunter. While the source of their gold remains to be seen, the ivory for which the city is named comes from those administrating it. A wealthy Wollof clan either possess features of an elephant as their Racial Magic or have taken elephants as their familiars. Their city is decorated if not constructed with the ivory and bones of their deceased and gilded with gold.   Various oases branch out north of the Sene River, reaching north into Marrakesh, reaching west to Kanem and stretching much futher northwest into Aznag and beyond. The Wollof control trade routes in and out of Dar, especially trade between Musi Kongo and the Dar Emirates. Some are even known to trade with Beyonders and merchants of the Frozen Wastes but none are sure how.
