Reane

“The hardest and most resilient of all man-folk can be found in the Reane. The region has known nothing but war and survival. It’s a wonder how society has even flourished here. Yet somehow it has.” Erik the Navigator in his book - “From West to East and Back Again’
To the north of the Spine mountain range spans a great northern land known as the Reane. From humble and harsh tribal beginnings to the birthplace of an Empire and the rumored site of the heroes ascension this land has a large and vital history to Elendor for a land so geographically mild.   Independent nations within the Reane region include: The Reane [Ree-ene] comes from the Old-Albaen for King / Royalty. The original naming convention for which is said to link back to the faith of the King-That-Never-Was, calling this land “Reanolholm” or King’s Home - referring to the preferred home of the fabled Hero. It is peppered with rivers and flowing down from the Spine mountains and the Highlands to the north of Seate.

Geography

The Reane varies from rolling hills to farmlands to vast forests. Unlike the southern side of the continent which saw a lot of its geographical formation come from magic, The Reane is formed around a defining tectonic shift between the planes oceanic and Longreech plate, hence why naturally the Reane forms a large valley. Much of the Reane’s more fertile land lies in the centre of the region, where many of the rivers run into the four major bays that litter the coast. The most fertile being the land that connects to the Dawnportal Basin - where the warmer southern winds can avoid The Spines.

The Kings Seate

The county of The King's Seate or The Hartland is mainly deciduous forest and Tagia. The further north you go the colder and more elevated the land gets. Seate itself is the tallest and only mountain on which the Capital is built. The Forested land is the reason for Seate being the Empires capital: It makes maneuvering invading armies neigh on impossible by land, giving the Reanians a highly defendable home field advantage.

Middleshire

Middleshire is a collection of Counties in the center of The Reanian Empire, that is the agricultural hub of The Reanian Empire. It consists of Osonia, Reave, Warrenshire, Agranshire and Bambeland. The area is mainly flat planes and farmlands, with a few forests and hills. The land is highly fertile and mainly used for farming and animal husbandry.

Sæbeorg

Sæbeorg is the region of northern counties known for producing the vast majority of the natural ores and stone of the Reane. It is made up of Cleoliver, Stapleshire and Alcebury. Towns and settlements of this area are far less spars than in Middleshire, as less of the land is required for farming. There is also a high population density of lower class peasantry looking for work in the various mines and escaping being levied by the crown - as mining is an exempt industry.

The Cullis Marshlands

The Cullis Marshlands are populated out of necessity rather than a need. The Marshes provide a natural barrier between the Reane and the Elven invaders. Because of this, its infrastructure and population revolves around supporting themselves and the military stationed both at the border and at Castle Cullis. The land is mostly dominated by the Cullis Marsh which has seen many a battle, and is often said to be haunted. The marshland does have one major export and that is Pitch.

Copper Coast

The Copper Coast is aptly named, due to it having the only ports to the bay of gold within Empire territory - So what little international trade takes place it often enters through the port towns of the copper coast. The Coppercoast is made up of the counties of Hates and Lulkanshire. While Lulkanshire has no actual coast on the bay of gold, it hosts the main roads leading deeper in to the Reane, so its towns often host many of the traders and caravans passing through building a solid working relationship with the nobility in Hates. The land here is a mix of forest and farms.

The Spine

The Spine is a mountain range that splits The Reane and The Kingdoms of Nardethel to the south. It shields most of the Kingdom of Nardethel from the cooler winds that blow across the Reanian Empire. The Spine is full of natural caves and trails but transit from north to south is neigh on impossible for larger forces militarily. Ecologically this region also still contains many of the predatory creatures which have since gone extinct in larger parts of the Reane such as Hippogriffs, Giant Eagles and Owlbears.

Supland

Supland is the only land within the Reanian Empire that is below The Spine. It contains the counties of Baldock and Boland. The area is little more than a bufferstate, inherited by the Empire 250 years prior when the Queen of the area married Godrick XI and became a client state of the Empire - before its full annexation on her death. Technically Supland would naturally fall into The Planes of Nardethel but Reanian Hegemony over the area and cultural migration has drifted the region closer to the inhabitants of the Reane.

Legierungsland & The Dawnportal Coast

The region of Legierungsland on the Dawnportal coast is technically known as the Earendel region of the Reane (meaning Shining light of dawn / first light), But since the independence and cultural shift with the Duchy of Legierungsland it is now simply referred to as such. The region is highly fertile land which slowly plateaus towards the coast where the Legierungslander capital of Rechin sits. This is also the only region of the Reane that connects to the warmer Dawnportal basin - the Legierungslander side of which is lined with high cliffs in which the well guarded and deep crystal mines exist.

Fauna & Flora

The flora and fauna of Reane is varied. It resembles that of Western Europe, with Deer roaming the forests and other fauna like bears and wild boar. The forests range from evergreens in the Tagia of the North to thick deciduous forests of Oak, Yew, Maples, Elms and Birches.   Steel Willow Trees are unique to the Reane. Their wood is said to be stronger than tempered steel and is the favored material for nobles of the Reane to build buildings from and use to make their shields. The wood itself is now protected and the methods of cultivation are a well guarded secret. Visually the wood has the look of dark brown wood that has been covered in a layer of frost. It, if polished, often can be as reflective as a mirror.

Natural Resources

Most Valuable Exports

The natural resources of Reane is mundane for the most part. They have the resources to sustain themselves, but Trade is not a massive aspect of life to the Reanian people. Its most valuable resources are the wool of the Balmeby Brown Winterdún Sheep and the Longhaired Black Barnbi from Middleshire and Lumber from the Steel Willow Trees that are forested around the capital of Seate.

Wool

The wool of the Balmeby Brown Winderdún Sheep is known to be thick and is sort after my many for making coats and bedding. It is highly insulating and is a favorite for those fighting the colder climates such as in the deep darks of Dwarven Holds or in the the everwinter of the Azdarkian Caliphate. The wool however is known to transmute slightly in warmer climes and the wearer doesnt seem to overheat if the climate were to suddenly change.   The wool of the Longhaired Black Barnbi is the only naturally occuring Black Wool in the entire known world. It is easily spun and is considered very fashionable in various social circles, especially in the Human Empires and in that of the Orcish Principality of Korzak.

Steel Willow Lumber

Steel Willow Lumber is never exported from the Reane. The use of Steel Willow is reserved for Empire citizens only - however products such as shields, furniture and other artisanal wares are allowed to be exported in a small quantity, often with a high export cost. Many wealthy people across the continents wish to own an item made from Steel Willow.
