The Duchy of Legierungsland

"The Metal Men of Legierungsland stand above most born of natural circumstance. They, Like ourselves, feel love, compassion, hatred, wroth but unlike ourselves they do not show it. They stand stoic and unafraid always, even if they feel it. Whether they were created that way by the Iron Duke or if they are simply our betters. We will never truly know. One thing is for certain however, The people of Legierungsland - metal or otherwise, are leaps and bounds our superiors in mind and spirit."   Erik the Navigator in his book - “From West to East and Back Again’

Structure

The Dutchy of Legierungsland is technically an autocracy under the current Duke of Legierungsland Duke Ichabod Von Brandt - The second Duke. But he is rarely seen in public, so most of the nations administration is completed by The Festung.

The Festung

The Festung is council made up of Generals and Leading Craftsmen who dictate the will of the Duke and run the day to day of the Duchy. The Festung is structured around a main council with sub committees that handle special matters. These committees are:
  • The Messer: The Festung’s War department / military committee . They handle the management, training and deployment of the Stahleigon.
  • The Mantle: The committee that administrate the magic sanctions of the Duchy, The control of Magic and the hunting of Rebellenmagier (Rogue Mages)
  • The Meyer: The committee that handles the major administration changes such as law and order, judicial process and tax collection.

Culture

The Culture of the region of Legierungsland is known as Scheltz. Linguistically, Its origins form from Old Albaen combined with words from the Elven and Feonian tongues. The Culture expands outside of Legierungsland to the fertile region around Dawnportal Basin. for more information: See Scheltz

Public Agenda

The Duchy of Legierungsland is a haven for technological advancement, which is often snubbed by the or outright blocked by the magical and spiritual institutions of the wider world. Their goal is to create a haven for the advancement of intellect. Diplomatically the nation prefers a state of content isolationism; never getting actively in world politics that does not concern their own welfare.

History

The Duchy has a marred past which no doubt shaped its existence today. It was actually formed by the Elven Eladrin Empire in the year 956 as a client state to help control the subjugated human population within the Reane. They appointed Karl Von Brandt - A Reave turned warlord who sided with the invaders. He was awarded the title of Duke for his service to the elves. The Duke ruled with an iron fist for 40 or so years until the Duchy itself almost crumbled around him.
In the Duchies 53rd year, in the winter of 1006, the armies of Godric I "Willowwall" were at the gates. Karl Von Brandt, now in his 90s and ruling only his name, had left his eldest sons Manfred and Jakob to lead. A bargain was struck where Legierungsland would betray the Elven invaders that created them, pay tribute to The Reane as reparation for the years of turmoil and give fighters to the rightful "Human" cause. Jakob, the second son of the Duke, volunteered to go fight so that Manfred could continue to rule the duchy as regent and raise their youngest brother Ichabod. leviesdevastating
Karl flew into a fit of rage when he found out that his sons had sold away their land to be little more than a Reanian puppet, when they themselves could have been kings - a hypocritical statement to say the least. When that is little more than what they were for the Elves. But the tirade was enough. Little is known of the what actually occurred but that night Manfred fell from the battlements. He did not die but he did fall into a deep slumber leaving him incapable. With the regent now also unable to rule Karl regained control of the council and ushered in a newer tyrannical period of Von Brandt reign.
With Manfred unable to rule and Jakob away, the Duchy technically fell to Karl's youngest - Ichabod Von Brandt . Ichabod was seen as weak by Karl and easy to manipulate, and he was right. Ichabod was young and unschooled in statecraft and nor did he care for it much - he mainly spent his time in his books. It was in this period that the people suffered greatly under Von Brandt rule. Families that had sent soldiers (Under the duchies orders mind you) were refused rations and treated with little respect. Three years of harsh rule followed and things were only set to get worse. On young Ichabods 14th birthday - one of the few days left supposed for joy, word arrived of the result of Massacre of the Marshes. Jakob, the Duke's second son was slain along with 86% of the Legierungslanders that were with him. The sorrow of the loss was felt across the land. Many gathered outside The Festung, crowds upon crowds, crying for vengeance and mercy on their plight alike. The Duke, himself distraught unleashed a storm of fire on the masses. Many were killed. No one would stand against the Duke's fury. Ichabod saw the pain and death before him and pushed his father, trying to get him to stop. Karl, Like his Eldest, fell from the battlements of the Festung but unlike his son, did not survive.
Ichabod's reign has been a period of isolationist prosperity. Whilst not completely existing without conflict, Legiersrungland managed to retain a fairly neutral standing within the regions, never themselves declaring war. Furthermore their policy of "Bewacht Aber Unbegrenzt" has allowed for unparrelled technological advancement, including the creation of the Warforged .

Territories

Whilst the Duchies main land is well documented, because of their control of many deep mines in which they get much of their natural resources the Duchy also holds a large domain of the Underdark beneath the Reane. Likewise, their Skyship towers within various states worldwide also count as enclaves of the Duchy and thus an extended part of the nation.

Military

The Stahlegion

The Stahlegion is the army of (predominantly) Warforged  created for the purpose of protecting and serving the Duchy. Originally created so that no Sons and Daughters of Legierungland would lose their lives should conflict arise again, these metal men or Warforged would prove the perfect soldiers. Its this small, but highly skilled and disciplined force, with overwhelming technology that has defended the realm since.   The Stahlegion has not gone without its controversy however. There is much criticism surrounding not only having given the Warforged life, but also now sending them to fight and die in the nations army.

Technological Level

The Duchy is the most technologically advanced nation in the entirety of Elendor, which has aided in its survival. Rather than a reliance on magic, the duchy relies on technical means aided by magic in their development, which has seen them develop faster in almost every field than their natural rivals. Because of this, immagration to the Duchy for those who wish to dedicate themselves to technology is common place - a fact that often upsets and causes friction with other nations.

Religion

The Religion of Legierungsland is organized by the Scheltz Church. They facilitate the worship of the Pantheon of Albae but with a more relaxed stance. Originally the Scheltz church was a direct branch of the The Church of Albae but in the recent century fully broke their ties due to the latters harsher stance on doctrine and persecution of those who did not conform to the church.    Today the Church of Scheltz acts more like a administrative body, fundraising and managing the various denominations of churches, temples and other places of worship within the borders of Legierungsland.

Agriculture & Industry

The lands of Legierungsland is known mostly for its large mineral deposits and mining networks, including the vast gem mines below the capital that provide the  Lebenskristall or 'lifestones' that are needed for the creation of Warforged as well as Luftkristall (Air Crystals) that power the Skyships the Duchy has become renowned for in recent years.   Their grasp of Metallurgy rivals that of the old Dwarven holds of Solorum, and produce 20% of the worlds metals that go to export. They are most known for their production of steel.    The cities of the land tend to be densely populated industrial hubs, with factories and smiths working around the clock. Outside the cities, the land is rolling fields of grain and orchards for food production. The warm air from Dawnportal Basin makes the climate good for growing food all year round.

Trade & Transport

The Duchy despite not having direct access to the Channel of Divinity and the bay of Gold is still a major power when it comes to trade. Their skyship technology makes them unrivaled in the transit of good intercontinentally. Not to mention the high quality of their metal exports at a much cheaper price than that of the Dwarven holds.

Education

Unlike a most of Elendor, Legierungsland offers public schooling from a young age; rather than the more reserved higher education that most nations subscribe to. Children of Legierungsland begin schooling at the age of 9 and continue until  the age of eighteen at which time they can choose to go on to other forms of higher education such as bard colleges and universities or they can stop schooling all together. Uniquely this decision is made by the student themselves rather than any parent or guardian figure. Schooling is free to any citizen of the duchy, however more prestigious private schools such as Daefnorth, Academy Of The Arcane do exist and often have entry fees / limitations on who can attend.

Infrastructure

The Road network within the Duchy is well established with the main arterial roads being big enough for four carriages in width. This network was developed for military use and the ease of maneuvering the Stalh Legion to the border from the capital. The Duchy also pioneered the Skyship innovation, thus sky travel for intercontinental goods and movement is common place for those who can afford it.
