The Goddesses and the Magic Eater

The folktale "The Goddesses and the Magic Eater" describes a possible chain of events surrounding the Copperwynn Magic Drain. It talks about the advent of a magic devouring creature that threatens the magic on Caramiza, who was confronted and stopped by Sabes and Gazezu. However, the two goddesses disagreed on how to ultimately defeat the creature, causing the situation to almost get out of hand.   The tale is told in different variants among the Gazeranfolk and especially taught to their young to teach the values of tradition and warn of the danger of too much curiosity but praise the value of working together, despite differences.

Summary

Most variations of the tale describe the area, today known as Copperwynn as a peaceful and fertile area, abundand in magic. Especially after the fall of the dark god Zecod, all unrest was gone from the area where his followers originally resided.Instead, Gazezu led her followers to the region to protect the lands and to cleanse them from the evil, the followers of Zecod might have left behind.   During these efforts, they found a mysterious artifact with unknown power. They asked Gazezu for guidance and she recognized the purpose of the artifact. She saw that it was a piece of Zecod, fallen during the Dark Tearfall to the lands, gathering magic for its master. Gazezu feared, this would enable Zecod to return one day and turned to Sabes for help.   The two together thought of many way to deal with the artifact, but they could not agree. Gazezu wanted to shield it off and guard it, to stop it from gathering more power. Sabes on the other hand wanted to study it, using the power for the good of people, instead of allowing it to accumulate the bad. Each one saw the plan of the other as dangerous.   So long did they disagree, that the power of the artifact grew stronger. Until one day it surprised the goddesses and suddenly exploded out into the world, draining all magical energy it could get.   In a valiant effort, the two goddesses finally stopped bickering and workd together. Sabes used the power of the stone against it, to turn it s effects against it and stopping the catastrophy while Gazezu created powerful barriers to seal away the evil.   But their inaction cost the area dearly. Many creatures perished and the magic was lost. Many great temples and shrines of the area lied in ruins, devoid of any power they ever had, soon to be forgotten by the people. To this day, the event had torn a wound into the fabric of magic, so Copperwynn could never heal.   And this is how Sabes and Gazezu vowed to always find a balance together, to never be struck by inaction.

Variations & Mutation

The stories disagree heavily on what the actual artifact was. Some claim it to be a magical stone, some talk of an eye of Zecod, others claim it was a creature, capable to eat magic around it. The Magic Eater is in fact the most popular variant but there are no signs of this being based on facts.
