Copperwynn Magic Drain

The Copperwynn magic drain refers to both an event several centuries ago as well as its aftereffects to the present day. After some cataclysmic event, possibly involving the fight between the Great Pantheon and the fallen god Zecod and their followers, all magical energy is constantly drained from every living being at a high rate.

Original Event

These events happened long ago and are mostly based on legend. There is no guarantee of them being factual.
Centuries ago, the area of Copperwynn was populated by the direct descendents of the First Folk, establishing a thriving civilization there with reportedly plenty of magic.   While the god Zecod had been defeated long before, their followers were still active, trying to free them from their prison. During one of the very first Dark Tearfall, they reportedly performed a large, bloody ritual to channel the magic of another deity towards Zecod. However, the ritual failed - the link to Zecod was established but there was no other deity trapped within that drain.

Immediate Effects and Confinement

With no other source available for the drain, it turned on the immediate area around the ritual. All ritualists were immediately drained of their Myridis as well as their life force. People tell that area was completely devoid of any color and sound. Time itself seemed to have stopped at the place of the ritual.   Slowly, the dark area started to expand and anything caught in it would lose its magical energy and their health as well. The further it expanded, the less drastic were the effects on health, but it would always drain all magic. The expansion of the colorless area started to speed up and soon it would catch many creatures unaware or unable to flee. Species with high magical affinity, like the Birchcrown Stag succumbed to these effects quickly.   Through a large effort by gifted sorceres, the tear in the fabric of magic was eventually heald, stopping the expansion of the area. At this point it covered the whole area now known as Copperwynn.   There are several Sabesian shrines which are said to be where the confinement was done - one of them can be found at the West Copperwynn Outpost

Long-Lasting Effects

While the original effects of draining color, sound and life force as well as seemingly slowing down time have subsided shortly after confining the expansion, there are still effects lasting till this day. Every living being and every source of Myridis will be constantly drained, typically just as fast as a living being can produce it. Larger reservoirs often experience a larger drain. As such, casting magic is very difficult without a power source at hand. Most creatures are also influenced in their development, as demonstrated by the Gazeranfolk, who would grow up much larger, healthier and stronger when not living in the area of Copperwynn. This Effect is still active today, as every living being and every source of Myridis will constantly be drained, almost as fast as it is produced.
