Grung/Frogfolk

"We were tasked as guardians of the Grung, and to that end we have failed. We pray to the Colony for their safety, that one day they'll find a new home in this threatening world." - Trynnicus Greenclaw, 909, 4th Cycle
Few knew about the existence of grung prior to the Great Fire of 908. A tribal community dwelling in the dense jungles of the Lotan Conservation, for centuries they were protected by the region's blue dragonborn to maintain their hunter/gatherer lifestyle without fear of foreign influence.    All of that changed with the Great Fire of 908, a wildfire that raged for three months straight and burned down half of the Conservation. Millions of acres were razed to the ground, including 85% of the grung's ancestral homelands. The devastation would take Lotan decades to recover from, and its government lacked the resources to help the grung rebuild their communities. Some chose to stay and rebuild from the ashes, but thousands of grung felt abandoned by Lotan's dragonborn and chose to seek a new life beyond its ancestral borders. Entire tribes relocated to sprawling metropolises, exposed to peoples and ideas completely alien to anything seen in Lotan. This industrializing world promised to change the lives of millions for the better, what promises would it hold for this race of frogfolk?

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

  • Following the Great Fire of 908, many grung fled to all corners of the Northern Territories. With the collapse of the ancient Kiri Clan kingdom that same year, the region was thrown into a new era of uncertainty where centuries of tradition were abandoned in a matter of months. Communities of grung surfaced everywhere from Sanjuro City to Suika, seeking to forge new lives as hunters and traders capable of navigating difficult terrain like the Koulan Forests. It's a hard life, and the grung are often put in competition with Lizardfolk and Bullywugs for similar work.
  • Some tribes sought a new life far removed from their old home and its bitter memories, sailing across the Karaga Sea for ports in Southern Pescat and Liat. These regions have had little experience with this race of frogfolk: at best the grung are seen as a sideshow novelty, at worst they're seen as being on par with the vicious Sahuagin. Despite these hurdles, the grung in this part of the world are determined to craft a new identity for themselves and their kind.
  • While many fled the scorched wastelands of their former home, some grung elected to stay in the Lotan Conservation and rebuild from the ashes. It's a hard life with little outside assistance, but the greatest challenge of all may be finding a way to preserve old communities in an ever-changing world.
