Voidheart Plot in East Marches | World Anvil

Voidheart

Summary

Harold has acquired a fragment of the heart of Volktollenh, a powerful Void Dragon, known as The Voidheart. This Voidheart has a field of stars within, with each colourful star representing a specific dragon in the world, and the heart acting as a sort of compass to these dragons. When one of these dragons dies near the Voidheart, a part of it's soul or essence is consumed within the Heart. Harold believes this Voidheart and it's abilities are the key to uncovering more about his Prismatic Dragon ancestry, and seeks to solve the puzzle it provides. Unfortunately it seems that the now weakened Volktollenh is also tracking these dragons and using them for his own gain.

Feigns alliance, but Harold has his doubts. In constant contact with Harold. Occupies The Void.

"It is hard for me to say exactly what corruption Volktollenh embedded within my psyche, for there are many factors at play that have influenced me over the aeons, so you'll have to forgive me if there are some...inaccuracies. I assume you have at least encountered The Guardian once before, and therefore must know of his powers of the Void, and it's capacity for a despair unlike the one encountered in the Shadowfell. A despair that has it's roots in loneliness, not just of the person, but of the mind. A 'madness' if you will."

"From what I've gathered when trying to ruminate on the subject, this 'madness' was initially latent magical and psychic energy caused by Volktollenh's powerful magic. An effect that we had no awareness of, and was just a byproduct of his Void Realm that we hid inside of. It seems that Volktollenh grew aware of this and, for whatever reason - I believe a madness of his own - he began to harness the power to manipulate those within. I believe that he was able to subtly manipulate all of us, but was able to focus this energy specifically on those he deemed powerful threats; particularly Athada and Cretacc'ilee, the two that had the power to bind him, and the ones that assisted in the creation of his Void Cache."

"His madness seemed to influence the core personality traits of each of us to a point of zealotry, a dangerous concept with a wyrm, as you understand, given our already powerful personalities. This is why I believe I was able to utilise it to escape the Fell - I make no disguises of the love of myself, and having this self-indulgence strengthened was a great boon. It is also why I seemed to have been less affected than my kin; I was a young Silver Wyrm at the time, and posed no great threat. Others though..."

"The aforementioned Athada, her mind grew thick with paranoia and she began constructing her elaborate mazes of brass. Prisons. Only now do I see that they were iterations of the previous attempts - ways to either sequester herself or Volktollenh. And Cretacc'ilee grew consumed with her quest for knowledge. She grew unresponsive to anything but books, or new information. Again, only now it is evident that this was in pursuit of power to destroy Volktollenh. Although none of us knew the reasoning at the time, it seems that subconsciously at least some of us were attempting to dispel the corruption."

"Only once the infighting broke out did some of us realise what was happening, but at that point it was too late. The Guardian seemed to have realised this as well, as he had collapsed his Cache at this time. An extraordinary effort that he no doubt had to recover from for a few millennia, and potentially at the cost of many of the Wyrmsouls he had devoured through this collapse."

"This collapse gave a few of us a momentary window of escape from the Void Cache prison we were confined in, and so whether in alliances or as solitary agents, we spread our wings and fled into the world. For the most part, hiding from both Pikyr and Volktollenh. I initially fled alongside my brothers, Crimathrax and Ectasiax. We had a chance encounter with Mythika, who had grown consumed with becoming the most powerful among us and leading legions of men to fight the two tyrants that had displaced us, and after we refused to submit to her own tyranny, she attacked us. That was the last I saw of her."

"Crimathrax's own thirst for vengeance began to take over shortly after that, and he became enamoured with the idea of proving that he was as strong as Pikyr. I do not believe he ever intended to hide, and was a danger to the three of us. A brief encounter with Pikyr had us scattered to the wind, where I'd lost Ectasiax. I took refuge, and this refuge was how I found myself in the Shadowfell."

"And so to give you a short answer - I am unsure of the exact nature of The Guardian's corruption, but I do know that it has the capabilities to heighten a Wyrm's personality to the point of obsessiveness and zealousness. A dangerous curse."

"And as for your quest for the Prismatic. They were lost early in our escape from Pikyr. The Guardian had told that they sacrificed themselves so that we could flee, and they should be honoured for their contributions to our safety within the Cache. But I do still feel their soul out there."
