"Ash" Aisling Mave Character in East Marches | World Anvil

"Ash" Aisling Mave

"Do you think the gods take interns? I want to see how the sausage is made."
- Ash, shortly after meeting the overgods Io and Ao, and shortly before the path of her life was set.

Physical Description

Ash is a short, sturdy woman with tanned, freckled skin only a few shades lighter than her copper hair. She is most often clad in a practical mossy green commoner's dress, wolfhide cloak, and a matching wide-brimmed hat with a pointy top. She scowls like other people blink.   When expecting battle she dons a set of half plate decorated in a white/black diamond checkerboard pattern and any of a number of shields. For some reason a frying pan features on her belt the way most warriors would carry a mace.

Personality

Ash is ever eager for puzzles, moral quandaries, or kernels of fresh knowledge. If there's a dark corner you can bet she's going to shine a light into it. She finds great pride and meaning in being a heritor to the project of civilization, though her opinions about it tend to run counter to more traditional viewpoints. Her brusque manner belies a heart that feels deeply for all who suffer, pain that she sees as her duty to alleviate.

Reputation

"Well pardon my Dwarvish, but fuck'em."
- Ash
Ash tends to accumulate some level of controversy. Her opinionated and outspoken nature tends to put her at odds with any who don't share her values. Despite never declaring such aloud (as far as she can remember) many assume Ash is out to kill the gods. Nicknames and titles of both serious and disparaging nature can be heard referring to her.   She is working to cultivate a reputation as one who is always willing to help - whether it be with an injury, puzzle, tricky question, or bit of lesser-known lore.

Relationships

Friendships

Asteria, Dena Merillin, Serj, Starlett, Dayearth, Samoka Blaise, Nameless Paladin, Sassafras Talmhach, Isabella Ludvari

Key Relationships

Cale Pasithea
Cale has gone from magic instructor to surrogate mother, a state of affairs Ash is beyond thankful for given her fraught relationship with her own blood parents.
Adelaide Anders
Adelaide was Ash's captain during her sojourning year. When they reunited in Vareholm following some drama on the high seas, Ash found that she couldn't stay at arm's reach. Adelaide helps her remain grounded in the here and now and human - a much needed reminder for a head so often in the clouds. The two plan to wed.
Oko
Ash collects Mentor figures like others collect dust. Oko provides her own brand of peculiar guidance related to Ash's higher order ambitions even if the two verbally clash quite often.

It's Complicated

Dallia Evergarden
Ash is Dallia's former apprentice. While they share many values and outlooks on life, Ash once said things that cannot be taken back during a mutual low point in their lives. The two are still picking up the pieces.
Hazel
Ash and Hazel are keepers of the dead or dying, albeit in different ways. They have very different ideas about how the question of mortality should be approached. Given Ash's animosity towards the Raven Queen in particular, the two have butted heads.

Backstory

When settlers first drove spade into the fresh earth that would become Vareholm, Ash was there. A child at the time, she grew up alongside the town and its cousin settlements. Each and every one is regarded as "Her land" and "Her people" even if there isn't blood or geography to further link the two.   When she came of age Ash took up practicing medicine under Dallia Evergarden. During the siege of Vareholm by the Illithid she proved herself Dallia's best student and elevated herself to apprentice, a fruitful but short lived chapter of her life.   After a falling out with Dallia she joined Cale to learn the arcane arts, her intentions being to find an ethical way to practice necromancy that might spare Vareholm some of the casualties of its perpetual battles for survival. Shortly after her debut amongst the adventurers she stood before the Overgods, Ao and Io, and was forever changed.   Within a few months she departed Vareholm to travel the seas and contemplate what she'd witnessed. On her return, Ash's arcane magic was gone. A new wellspring of divine power rose up in its place, born of her own fervor and an oath she made to herself.   Back on her grind, Ash is sinking her teeth into every challenge that Vareholm and its adventuring population faces.
