Ykan Birds

Ykan Birds or simply ykans1 are large, flightless birds found in Ela'k Forest and Jarrak Forest in western Dragonía. While the name ykan can also refer to the various flightless bird species of the western woodlands in general (such as Blue-crested Ykans and Splendid Ykans, most Útels use the name to refer to this particular species as it's the most common one.

Anatomy & Morphology

  The common ykan is the largest of its kind and somewhat resembles the Rekan Birds on the great plains north and west of Ela'k Forest, though the two are only distantly related. They're completely wingless (lacking even vestigial bones), with large, strong feet and long necks. The feet are their main form of defense when fleeing is not an option.  

Dietary needs and habits

  Although they are primarily grazers, ykan birds are far from picky, feeding on a variety of plants, including nuts, berries and especially overripe fruits and grapes when in season. They also eat insects and snails some some extend, especially during winter.

Social Structure

  Ykan birds travel either in pairs or small groups.  

Uses, products & exploitation

  Common ykans were first domesticated by the ancient Alalaríans millennia ago, and are common livestock among their Útel descendants. They are raised primarily for their eggs and meat, both of which are considered delicious, along with their plumage which is used to adorn cloaks and jewels, and skin.

  Ykans rely mostly on their sight to find food and spot predators.

Least concern.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Much of their body is covered in soft, grey plumage, sometimes sporting darker spots and splotches. A stripe extends from their beak to the back of their head, the stripe and eyes are both blue, while the beak is dark grey. The feet are dark grey with black claws.
