Splendid Ykans

The splendid ykans¹ are among the largest of the ykan birds, a group of flightless bird species found throughout Ela'k Forest and Jarrak Forest in western Dragonía.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are some of the largest birds in the western woodlands, although notable lighter and more gracile than the common Ykan Birds. Like other birds in the family, they lack wings and instead rely on their powerful legs to avoid dangers.

Dietary Needs and Habits

While they are mostly browsers, as opposed to the common ykans which prefer grazing, their diet features noticeably more insects, snails and small invertebrates than any other ykan. Because of this, it's not uncommon for Útels to have a splendid ykan in their garden to rid it of snails and other pests.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Splendid ykans, along with common ykans, are raised as poultry by Útels for their meat, eggs and plumage. The latter is considered the most important product, used adorn cloaks and jewelry, as the eggs and meat are considered inferior to those of the common ykan.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Splendid ykans are native to northern Ela'k Forest, but the domesticated variety has been introduced all over the region.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking

The males' plumage is dark green with a distinctive metallic sheen, with blue underparts, and white head and tail. Females have a similar colour scheme, though duller, but have bright blue eyes. Unlike other ykans, the splendid ykan has no crest on its head.
