Randanas

Ötric: Randana /raːntaːna/
Randanas1 are several species of large, flightless wading birds primarily found near rivers and lakes in the eastern part of the great plain that covers much of northern Dragonía, particularly on the Plain of Kings as well as parts of the eastern Plain of Spirits.
Their diet varies between species, ranging from fish to insects to small mammals, reptiles and amphibians, usually in the reeds along riverbanks and lake shores, though the common randana is known to catch juvenile feral Erlen Lizards on the outskirts of towns and villages.
They usually form large, mixed flocks of different species of both randanas and other birds such as Jalas, except for mating season when they pair up to guard the eggs. Chicks of all species initially feed on various seeds and small insects.
Notable species includes:
  • Common randanas have brown plumage with irregular black spots, and are found both around Fekai Lake and the eastern rivers.
  • Leþa randanas have blue plumage with black back and white underside, and are found by the upper Óv and its confluence with the Ett River in western Plain of Kings and eastern Plain of Spirits, respectively.
  • Moon randanas are dark blue-gray with a distinct white, crescent shaped marking on their back, and are endemic to the banks of Ett.
  • Spotted randanas have bright red plumage with white spots, and are common around the rivers Ellú, Draapei and Takakatys on the eastern Plain of Kings.

    Uses, Products & Exploitation

Unlike rekan birds, randanas have never been domesticated by the Mörkels inhabiting the Plain of Kings and are mostly hunted for their meat and feathers, though some such as leþa randanas are protected due to their association with certain deities or folklore. Warriors of the Ysans of southern Outer-Dagtí wear a necklace adorned with a randana feather as a sign of vigilance, and the birds are a common motif on frescoes and tapestries inside palaces, academies and temples.
