Föð-lút

Föð-lút, also know as vöð-lút or sacred snow, is a strange substance found only in Taarzirin Cave in Krystó Ridge in northern Dragonía. Located above the city of Krystos, capital of the eponymous city-state, both the cave and material are considered sacred by many Ameders, or at least significant in the sense of being one of the few things that could be considered unique to their culture.

Properties

Material Characteristics

At first glance, föð-lút resembles ordinary snow, whether in colour, texture or consistency, but it neither feels cold to the touch nor melts down when exposed to heat. It can be molded much the same way as snow, and when treated with a certain concoction, it turns transparent like glass.
Another notable characteristic is that when brought a certain distance away from Taarzirin Cave, the föð-lút disintegrates.

Origin & Source

Like the Lightstones of western Dragonía and Ba-Olúl once found in central Dragonía, föð-lút is a material that's a product of the flow of magic.

History & Usage

Discovery

Taarzirin Cave and by extension föð-lút were first discovered and described in 432 b.Dr by Elekea the Pale, a member of núraf-naa, the mages' caste and -later on- the aristocracy, while gathering plants up on Krystó Ridge.

Everyday use

The most common use for föð-lút is to apply it to the outer walls of buildings for insulation and to make them glisten in the sun, and fit transparent föð-lút into windows in much the same way as glass panes. A more recent tradition is to make jewelry of all sorts out of the material, both in its transparent and opaque form, which the aristocracy displays freely while members of the other castes often restrict their use to weddings and other celebrations.
Föð-lút is also used in the mixture used for members of the aristocracy to become full-fledged mages, as it alleviates the fever somewhat which one must endure to become one. While a significant reason the material became so important early in Krystos' history, this usage has since become less relevant nowadays as fewer aristocrats choose to pursue studying the flow of magic.

Distribution

Law & Regulation

Traditionally, only members of the núraf-naa are allowed to harvest and prepare föð-lút for its various uses.
