Ervel

Ervels are the mages and scholars in Mörkel society on the Plain of Kings, roughly equivalent to arvels, members of the arv-naa caste among the Útels on the other side of Dragonía and, less directly, the núraf-naa caste in the Ameder city-states to the north.
Their profession developed early in Mörkel history as an amalgamation of several different castes in ancient Móerkel society, specifically those of mages, healers, scribes, whose goal was and still is to preserve, study and adapt the knowledge of their ancestors to the new environment and challenges their people faced after having their home was destroyed by The Dragon.

Career

Qualifications

There are rarely any strict rules on who can become an ervel, and as such they hail from all walks of life and often include those deemed unfit for warfare, farming and other physically demanding fields. However, since the process of becoming a full-fledged mage can be lethal and leaves one with weakened immune system and -in most cases- infertile at best, most ervels remain as scholars in more mundane fields.

Career Progression

Ervels who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the flow of magic must drink a special brew which permanently alters their body's ability to sense and manipulate magic. If all goes well, it puts them in a deep sleep that can last for several days and leaves their body weakened afterwards, but now more fine-tuned to the ebb and flow of the element of Earth.
The survivors of this process wear more elaborate headwraps than other ervels, and rarely venture outside the academy.

Perception

Purpose

Ervels' role in Mörkel society differs somewhat from kingdom to kingdom, with those living on the western Plain of Kings being focused writing and keeping records of various things and teaching nobles the art of reading, writing, arithmetic, history and mythology, while the ones to the east are also responsible for healing people and using magic to make sure the crops and livestock stay healthy and, in some cases, predict the weather by sensing changes in the flow of magic.

Social Status

Ervels to the east, where the element of Earth is stronger, enjoy much higher status than those to the west, as they are more capable of sensing and manipulating magic and thus more involved in daily life, while the latter tend to keep to themselves and are treated first and foremost as scribes.

Operations

Tools

Traditionally, ervels wear yellow and green clothes in a similar style as commonly seen on the Plain of Kings, along with a kind of green turban, used to signify different ranks and to store reed-pens.

Workplace

Most ervels live and work in a kantí, a kind of monastery and academy, often located outside major settlements, especially to the west, while some are located near or attached to the royal palace. These buildings are traditionally semi-subterranean, with frescoes or tapestries inside showing scenes from history and mythology, and often intricately carved an painted pillars and support beams, lit by little more than simple oil lamps or candles.
The academies invariably contain a shrine to Ahes, god of healing, laws and magic
