Cabton

Overview

Cabton, which now lies in ruin, was a small town along the Great Achton River between Merlen and Beed. An eruption from a previously unknown volcano destroyed Cabton and the nearby Coloktial clan in recent times.
Characteristics
Cabton, like all distant mountain settlements, had been self sufficient, growing much of their own food, harboring their own craftspeople, and taking advantage of some strength of the region or its people in order to create the wealth needed to fund transport of materials from downstream. Cabton sat in a narrow valley with poor soil, so its people relied partially on food grown in nearby towns. However, the people there combed the nearby mountainsides for gems, of which they still found in relative abundance up until the town's destruction. The town's nickname was "Crystal Canyon," though this name was not well known.   The Order of Innena had a regular presence in Cabton due to its closeness to the main Coloktial clan at the time. Before the eruption of Sorrow Mountain, previously called Shining Mountain, the Coloktialo kept their leaders close in order to facilitate communication with the Innena, though they had long since moved many of their valuables to their current lead clan. The Order, while keeping in communication, also managed the influx of treasure hunters entering Cabton, preventing the mountainsides from being clogged by those who believe they can find an end to their poverty. They only allowed those who intended to permanently move to Cabton, but that allowance likely allowed the town to remain at a sustainable population, as most residents were men. Previous leaders centuries ago decreed that women were not suitable for Cabton's chief industry and thus should not comprise more than a small fraction of the town's population, only enough to ensure the town does not fall apart. Since then these decrees have been reversed but the effects remained even until the town was destroyed.
Eruption and Aftermath
The residents of Cabton, and everyone else in the region, were unaware that Shining Mountain was a volcano and that it could erupt. The only known volcano was Xazdos Volcano in the center of Xazdos Islands. As Xazdos was believed by the Gendirlo to be the origin of land and heat by the God of Summer, they thought no other volcanoes could exist unless the gods willed it or formed one as a weapon in their eternal war. Humans are largely ignorant of the Gendirl knowledge of the gods, but still had no reason to believe there could be another volcano within Settled Dosjorya; no eruptions in two thousand years solidified that idea.    Luckily when the volcano erupted, it only affected a small area and there was ample warning. Other villages were affected, the Coloktial clan nearby was also destroyed, and the town of Beed could see the ash cloud to their south. Some Cabton residents perished, but they were those who refused to give up their home and who believed the winds would blow the ash and lava east, away from the town. Burning hot rock and ash assaulted the town, destroying buildings and burying the land. With great effort, the town could be restored, though when some residents traveled to Hasenburg to ask the military and the Order of Innena to help them, their requests were denied. Cabton's land would return to the wild, they said, and remain in ownership of the Gendirlo unless or until the land naturally heals.    Enough years have passed that anyone passing through on their way to and from Beed can witness broken structures poking through mounds of grass covered ash. Former residents sometimes return, searching for left behind belongings or other treasures that might be buried under the ash. A few make an honest attempt to dig out the town, but these efforts are small and accomplish little. After being denied assistance, many residents began to think it was because of the threat of future eruptions and from then on gave up any hopes of returning out of those fears.   Gem hunters frequent the mountains in the area, now unrestricted by the Innena. But these men avoid Cabton, instead sticking to the slopes where the ash piles are smaller and where they may find what they are looking for. Since the eruption, great amounts of volcanic glass have been found directly on the now named Sorrow Mountain's slopes and in nearby places, including within the ash in Cabton.    The bodies of those that remained during the eruption have never been recovered. A ceremonial pyre was lit nearby for the victims as soon as was safe, though everyone agreed that the dead would remain in the ash for that could be considered a proper burial and to dig them out would be a dishonor.
