Mystanidrax te Kinyel

Mystanidrax te Kinyel (a.k.a. Mystanidrax the Gold, Minda Kinmei)

Mystanidrax te Kinyel (Mystanidrax the Gold) is a female Kinyel Derkorim (Gold Dragon). She is only about 45 years old, still young for a Derkorim, but nearing adulthood. When she is in Human form (which is often), she uses the name Minda Kinmei and appears to be about 20 years old.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Mystanidrax te Kinyel, whether in Derkorim or Human form, is beautiful and in perfect physical health. In Human form, she is quite a bit taller than most females, and is preternaturally strong and agile, with incredibly quick reflexes and balance. She is careful to hide her physical abilities when among the royal and noble women of Sudland with whom she spends much of her time.

Special abilities

Mystanidrax, as a Kinyel Derkorim, has all of the abilities of other Gold Dragons - flight, breath weapons, spellcasting, resistance to physical weapons and magic, and so on. While in Human form, she cannot fly or use her breath weapons, and she does not have resistance to physical weapons, but she retains her resistance to magic and her spellcasting abilities. She is also much stronger and more agile than most Humans, making her a very dangerous fighter even in her Human form.

Apparel & Accessories

As a Kinyel Derkorim, Mystanidrax has her own hoard of treasure she keeps in her lair in The Great Western Mountains. With a small portion of the gold of her hoard, she reluctantly bought some very high quality clothing suitable for a noble young woman of Sudland. The clothes she chose were, of course, predominantly of gold-colored silk with gold threads woven in to the cloth to form beautiful hems and patterns. Her clothes are also decorated with beautiful gemstones. Many of the young noblewomen look askance at her clothing, thinking they are much too ostentatious for a woman of her common station (and they wonder where she got the money to buy them), but Mystanidrax cares nothing for what they think or say. She is, after all, a Dragon, and as a Dragon, being ostentatious is an essential part of her nature.

Specialized Equipment

In her sleeve, Mystanidrax usually carries an Elvirim smallsword gifted to her by Halueth Benialir Shuruziat'Athem.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Mystanidrax te Kinyel was born in the lair of her mother, Seiradrax te Kinyel, deep in The Great Western Mountains near Ostnúmenoron about 45 years ago. Seiradrax te Kinyel educated her young offspring well, and Mystanidrax was a gifted student. Mystanidrax was precocious and began speaking Derkkou when she was just a year old. She learned to fly at a young age, soon becoming as swift and agile as a Steppe Gyreagle. She loved to soar over the mountains, exploring the valleys and heights of the vast western range. From a young age, she was naively brave and fearless.   On one of her explorations, she unknowingly wandered into the territory of Umbrexordrax te Hei, an adult male Hei Derkorim (Black Dragon). Umbrexordrax attacked Mystanidrax, but thanks to her agility and speed, Mystanidrax escaped, leading Umbrexordrax toward the territory of her mother, Seiradrax. Hearing Mystanidrax's cries, enraged that Umbrexordrax would dare to attack her precious daughter, Seiradrax te Kinyel tore Umbrexordrax to shreds and together, they ate his remains. Seiradrax and Mystanidrax claimed his treasure hoard for themselves, dividing it between them. Proud of her daughter for using her intelligence and skill to escape, but upset that she easily could have been killed, Seiradrax kept a closer watch on Mystanidrax for several years until she was convinced that her daughter was capable of protecting herself.   When Mystanidrax was about 30 years old, Seiradrax taught her how to shapeshift to Human and Elvirim form and began exposing her to Human and Elvirim cultures. The first people she met were the friendly and profound Elvirim of Ostnúmenoron. The Elvirim, of course, understood that she was a peaceful and sociable Kinyel Derkorim and welcomed her to learn their customs, culture, and language. Mystanidrax befriended Leilatha Elorialir Shuruziat'Athem and learned much about the world from her and her father, Halueth Benialir Shuruziat'Athem. Halueth Shuruziat also taught Mystanidrax to fight with sword and bow while in humanoid form. With her unnatural eyesight, strength, reflexes, and agility while in humanoid form, Mystanidrax quickly became very accomplished with both.   When she was about 40 years old (five years prior to the present time), Mystanidrax claimed the empty lair of Umbrexordrax te Hei as her own and began modifying it to her liking. After about a year of work, Mystanidrax moved from her mother's lair to her new home. Her lair is only about 500 miles to the east of her mother's lair, making it easy for Mystanidrax to see and consult with Seiradrax when she feels the need.   In recent years, Mystanidrax has spent much of her time among the Humans of Daskar, curious about the differences between Humans and the Elvirim. In her Human form, Mystanidrax is considered very beautiful, and has drawn many admirers eager to win her affections, much to her amusement. Humans are unable to discern her true nature, believing her to be a Human woman; albeit, a quite unusual one. In her Human form, as Minda Kinmei, Mystanidrax befriended Helen Johansen, Secretary for Royal Affairs in the government of Sudland. Through her, Mystanidrax has gotten acquainted and becomes friends with many of the noble and royal ladies in Daskar, and she spends much of her time socializing with them at Tachibana Castle. She has concocted a plausible story about her origins to hide her true identity as a Derkorim, as most Humans would be terrified of her if they knew.   As Mystanidrax is nearing adulthood, she is becoming more proficient in using Derkorim magic. Her native intelligence increases her proficiency with magic, so even as a young Dragon, her abilities are the equivalent of a Human Magus, especially with thaumaturgic magic and enchantment. Her enchantment spells have allowed her to escape detection of her true nature on more than one occasion.

Education

Mystanidrax te Kinyel was well educated as a Derkorim by her mother, Seiradrax te Kinyel, and further educated in Ostnúmenoron by Leilatha Elorialir Shuruziat'Athem and Halueth Benialir Shuruziat'Athem. She is accomplished both in dragon form and in human form as a fighter and Magus. She speaks Derkkou, Elvirim, Sudkou, and Nodkou. As a being not subject to the Praxis Cogendi or Praxis Illicitus, she has a far deeper understanding of mathematics and the nature of the Universe than any Human or Elvirim, with the exception of Edan. However, since Derkorim are creatures of magic, Mystanidrax does not pursue technological advancements.

Intellectual Characteristics

Mystanidrax te Kinyel is brilliant for a Derkorim of her age. She is inquisitive, curious, and like all Derkorim, acquisitive. She is still young and relatively inexperienced with Human emotions, society, and culture, so she sometimes seems odd, aloof, or occasionally rude to her Human companions. Like other Derkorim, she loves gold and other precious metals, jewels, beautiful artwork, and other treasures. Why Derkorim love those things is still a mystery that perhaps even they don't completely understand. Though friendly, she is not overly gregarious. She enjoys the company of one or two companions more than large gatherings.

Morality & Philosophy

Mystanidrax aligns with The Elysium. As a Kinyel Derkorim and like her Elvirim teachers and friends, she follows Eia’au, and philosophically is most close to the Safirim Baiyamuta.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Like all Derkorim, Mystanidrax is motivated by acquisitiveness (some would say greed). She is also curious and inquisitive. She hates injustice and selfishness.

Hygiene

Mystanidrax is a Derkorim, so Human hygiene has been a learning process for her. While at Ostnúmenoron, Leilatha Elorialir Shuruziat'Athem taught her much of what she needed to know to pass as an Elvirim or Human woman, so she has learned to bathe and wash frequently, use appropriate makeup and perfumes, and so on.

Social

Family Ties

Mystanidrax is close to her mother, Seiradrax te Kinyel. She does not know who her father is, and her mother refuses to talk about him. It seems there must have been a falling out or some other issue between them, which is unusual for Kinyel Derkorim.

Religious Views

Mystanidrax te Kinyel learned from her Elvirim friends to follow Eia’au, and her moral and ethical beliefs align most closely with the Safirim Baiyamuta. She believes strongly in justice and order, and she does her best to uphold those values.

Social Aptitude

Mystanidrax is intelligent and a good conversationalist, but her viewpoints sometimes seem a little odd to her Human friends. She occasionally says things that seem like non sequiturs, leaving her companions puzzled or amused.

Speech

Mystanidrax te Kinyel's speech, especially in Sudkou, has an accent that people cannot place. Her pronunciation is somewhat different than usual, the result of learning Sudkou from her mother and from the Elvirim of Ostnúmenoron.

Wealth & Financial state

Mystanidrax has acquired a relatively small (for a Derkorim) but growing hoard of treasure that she has stashed and magically protected within her lair in The Great Western Mountains. Her hoard was initially started when her mother, Seiradrax te Kinyel, divided the hoard of Umbrexordrax te Hei, the Black Dragon Seiradrax killed after he attacked Mystanidrax, with her. Mystanidrax has continued to add to her treasure hoard with gifts and gold she has received, much of it from Human suitors attempting to win her favor - none of whom will ever succeed, but she is happy and amused to let them continue to try.

Hello Peter. I liked how you give this dragon a story on how they started their hoard. So often, dragons have hoards because dragons have hoards... no explanation needed. I found this refeshing.   I did wonder what prompted Minda's curiosity about humans that has caused her to spend most of her time as a human. Did she have a memorable encounter with a human a few years back and she wants to know more? Did she hear stories of humans from her mother or the Elvirim and wanted to learn for herself? What caused this new focus for this (presumably) long lived but young being at this point in time?

Thanks for your comment and for liking my article! Your question is a good one. In the D&D lore (the Forgotten Realms Wiki, to be exact), it says of Gold Dragons, "When traveling, it was common for a gold dragon to assume a particularly non-threatening form in order to put adventurers at ease, as well as to observe local communities and to catch up on gossip and news of the outside world. In many cases, the dragon would use its disguise to provide help, company and comfort to those in need, or to set up traps for evildoers by using itself as bait." I based my "Kinyel Derkorim" loosely on the D&D lore, so I figured that it was plausible that Minda, being a young and curious Dragon, would want to hang out with Humans for a while to see for herself what they are like (she's unimpressed, lol). Anyway, you question definitely gives me some thoughts about things I might add to the article to clear that up! Thank you!
