The Great Expanse
'Terrible, dreadful place... but it's home. Leave? No, I couldn't..." - Expanse Dwarf on Interview
The Great Expanse is an area within the Great Desert, located in the western regions of the Kaokut Coalition. While the Great Desert is, overall, a beautiful, slowly shifting mass of sand and wind, the Great Expanse is bereft of sand and carries a billowing wind at all times. Due to a quirk of geography not fully understood by scholars, the area's winds spiral outwards and away from the center of the Expanse, carrying with it any sand that may have been there. With the bedrock laid bare, little lives there except for crimson beetles and expanse dwarves.
Weather in the Expanse is largely non-existent. Almost every day is sunny, cloudless, and incredibly hot. Scholars who have interviewed expanse dwarves have found that it typically rains but once per year and sometimes not at all, depending on how strong the storms from the South Sea are that year. Storms that carry themselves past the Tempest Rise and the Vintiz River and reach the Great Desert have a chance to provide rain to the Expanse, but this is not always guaranteed.
The only reason that expanse dwarves are able to live in the Expanse is due to the Sandy Obelisk, whose sole function apperas to be sustaining the minimal ecosystem of the area. Within a few hundred meters of the Obelisk, the winds are calm and soil is allowed to settle and provide space for farming. The expanse dwarves have settled around this area and taken advantage of the solitude of the Expanse to develop a unique culture fully intent on preserving themselves away from the rest of civilization.
