Sandy Obelisk

'Oh my gods, a giant rock!' - Observant Scholar on First Encounter with the Sandy Obelisk

Standing ten meters tall and three meters in width, the Sandy Obelisk within the Great Expanse remains an utter mystery for mundane and magical scholars alike. With no clear source of the unusually dense rock and no clear markings upon it, its origin is unclear. On the rare expeditions to the Obelisk, wizards have investigated it for enchantments, of which they have found many related to pyromancy, cryomancy, geomancy, and aeromancy.   The best guess regarding the function of these enchantments, which are difficult to decipher due to the number and complexity of them, is that they form a manner of weather control. As evidence, for several hundred meters around the Obelisk, the winds of the Expanse cease and the air is cooler. Soil is able to exist around the Obelisk in defiance of the usual hostilities of the lifeless area. Expanse dwarves say they owe their existence to the Obelisk, which appears to be true.   However, on close examination during the most recent expedition, the Obelisk carries hex magic as well, which is concerning for those living continuously in its proximity. One scholar theorized that the hex enchantment converts those that seek shelter under it into a living incarnation of its will, but this is unlikely at best. Though it would explain why expanse dwarves strongly resist leaving their home, it would be a unique effect unseen elsewhere in the world.

Chip Off the Block

We're looking to hire you to bring back a piece of the Sandy Obelisk for further study! (Payable upon receipt. Individuals responsible for their own safety.)   I can only imagine how quickly you would be laid out by expanse dwarves when you try to damage the sole reason they can live peacefully.
