Hobton (Huh-ob-tonn)

Hobton is a village that primarily exists as a holdover from the old days of the ferry between Lynnport and Hobton, via the Dragon's Eye.  With the building of Enthmere and the advent of better ship building it has been gradually shrinking over the last 300 years, but has a nice enough location that it seems to be mostly stable at around 200 residents, many of whom are older folk who used to ply their trade up and down the Enth.

Demographics

Government

Alderman elected every 5 years.

Defences

Five of the hardier villagers are employed as Night Watchmen, each taking a pair of nights apiece during the tenday to keep an eye out for danger and threats, but in general many of the villagers are ready to pick up arms against any incoming threats.  It would be rare here to find anyone except the very youngest who doesn't have a tale of fighting off a hungry river monster or giant crab, and they keep weapons to hand.

Industry & Trade

Most residents still find their living through the river, whether that be fishing, ferrying or shipbuilding.

Infrastructure

A blacksmith and a couple of decent inns cater to those around the village and visitors from the river, and there is a small market on Diandays that often resembles a bring and buy sale.  There is a small docks and even a family run shipbuilder, although they tend to do more patching and mending than building.

Guilds and Factions

Hobton is remarkably uncontentious.  They have a general agreement that in order to be considered for Alderman you have to have been resident in Hobton for more than ten years and be of sufficient age that you should no longer be expected to be active in a trade (and can therefore spend your time running the village).  They also agree that you can't hold more than one 5 year term, so there are typically only a few candidates each year who are both willing and eligible to be elected, and the villagers quite happily cede authority over village matters to the Alderman, who often receives the honorary title of Grandfather.  Sentences like 'run along and ask Grandfather how many traders need ferrying up to Edom tomorrow' are common!

History

There has been a fishing village here for a very long time, and for much of that they were a fairly major hub for anyone wanting to travel up or down the west coast over land, being on one of the safer and easier routes through the island and having a great location for two short-leg ferry rides over the Enth.  Once mighty Enthmere was constructed in the 700s, more and more folks started moving between Lynnport and Enthmere instead, leading Hobton to explore other avenues- but with Enthmere being a fairly unreliable place nowadays trade in the ferrying business has picked up once more.

Tourism

Hobton gets a steady flow of visitors, but most are typically only staying for one or two nights on their way elsewhere.  As such although it has a few nice inns with good food, there isn't really a great deal in terms of tourist focussed trade and services.

Architecture

Hobton is mostly comprised of neat cottages made from attractively rounded riverstones. Each house tends to have a well-fenced garden (often made of pieced together driftwood) with greens, herbs and chickens, and the roads in the village are well tended. Both inns are directly next to the small docks, so the rest of the village is pleasantly quiet most of the time.

Geography

Being on the coast of the Brackish Enth, Hobton is fairly flat, with the Malen Dauen plains stretching northwards and mud flats extending along the banks of the Enth is either direction.  It is typically fairly temperate, veering to warm, but the river breezes cut the heat a lot.
