Corubanis

The largest and most prosperous of the free cities of the Edic Concord.

Demographics

In the years since the fall of the Iron Empire, Corubanis has become considerably more isolated and less diverse with the university as the only real source of continued visitation from outsiders. The city is primarily inhabited by the Edic People with a sizable minority of Simerian People in the northeast.

Government

City-state confederation

Defences

Corubanis is a walled city with farmland extending along the banks of the river to the north. There is a city guard that patrols the walls and streets, as well as the canal ways night and day. A regular garrison of professional soldiers is housed in the Shield District with loyalty to the regent. Mages trained by the Strigidine Order also offer their services in times of strife, though they are not legally bound to do so.

Industry & Trade

Magical engineering and crafting, emphasis on glassblowing and lace-making.

Infrastructure

Constructed in a series of concentric half circles around the cliffside harbor, Corubanis is a city built along canals and waterways. Along the Outer Ring sits the Trough to the outer west, a long, narrow neighborhood of ramshackle houses and sewage; the Gearworks in the north, an industrial area where magical and mundane reagents are made, forges produce raw materials, and new schematics are tested; and the Simerian Sector along the eastern wall, where the descendants of the city's former conquerors now reside. Tucked against the Trough, a collection of smaller neighborhoods line the major canal that separates the Outer Ring from the Mid Ring. The tavern town of the Swillway stands along the banks of the river while the open forum of Players Row and the brothels and theatres of the Dancing Lights District carry on the area’s theme of drink and revelry. The area is most popular with the traders and sailors who make their way up and down the river. Behind the Dancing Lights District sits the quieter neighborhood of Twilight Terraces where wealthier courtesans and artists tend to converge

The Mid Ring comprises another collection of districts with a more gentrified populace. On the western side of the Main Canal sits the Menagerie, a sprawling green walkway filled with animal exhibits and a tall stone tower housing messenger birds called the Owlery. Fountain Square lies to the west and serves as a the market district for the western side of the city, while Windward Alley houses a cluster of mage towers, wizards’ sanctums, and alchemical laboratories for the city’s many erudite researchers. Tucked against the city wall to the south lies Neina's Nook, a humble neighborhood for average artisans, workers, and those in service. On the eastern side, lies Craftsman Square, where the city’s many guilds have built their halls. In the outer crook of the Ring sits Marketgarden, where street vendors and hawkers gather to sell their wares. South of the market is Ivory Trellis where more upscale merchants have their permanent storefronts, while Khima's Corner takes the cliffside as a home for dozens of middle-class families. Along the inner crook of the eastern Mid Ring sits High Town, a residential neighborhood popular among the more well to do merchants and artisans, while Lady’s Stair with its beautiful hanging gardens and fountains plays home to aristocratic townhouses. Just across from Khima’s Corner sits the Stone Quarter, built as a gift from the Masons Guild for their fellow Guild Masters.

The western edge of the Inner Ring is dominated by Temple Street, the religious district that houses the city’s multitude of cathedrals, temples, and houses of worship, and the Crystal Lyceum, the university that draws hundreds of individuals to the city every year in the hopes of joining the Strigidine Order. In the east lies the Garden Palace of the Corubanic Merchant Prince as well as the Shield District that houses the city’s military forces.

Though not considered a proper district of its own, the heart of the city is composed of the harbor and surrounding docks that feed the economy of the metropolis. Massive, magically-reinforced cranes stand guard at the edges of the cliff to safely raise and lower merchant vessels from the waters of the Darwol far below.

Architecture

Corubanis is a primarily sandstone and marble city with russet red tile roofs for the more prosperous city dwellers and wood-and-thatch hovels for the less fortunate. Only in the Simerian Sector does the general theme of the city take a noticeable break with stone, wood, and plaster buildings that hearken back to their woodland ancestry. The Inner Ring of the city boasts the most spectacular displays of architecture with the palace, temples, and university surrounding the harbor. One of the most famous points of interest in the city is the massive, intricate circle of teleportation wrought in colored mosaics before the entrance to the university.
