Miss Andrew's Social Parlour - 712 E High St

Set back from the street and partially screened from view by a cluster of lovely trees is this modest but antique gingerbread-adorned house. Here to the public eye is Miss Andrew's Social Parlour. On the surface it is a social club for better bred New Jerusalem women of genteel character. A place where ladies can meet, socialize, play cards or mahjong, and have small glasses of fruit or dandelion wine. Run by Miss Elizabeth Andrews, 62, one of New Jerusalem's upper class female scions, all of this is true, up to a point, but those who are part of the exclusive membership (many are turned away) of the Social Parlour know better.   Miss Andrew's Social Parlour is, in fact, a rather old, 30 years this last spring, gathering place and outlet for New Jerusalem's and the surrounding area's lesbian community. Here ladies of a 'similar affinity,' as well as those in 'Boston marriages,' can meet, socialize, and do all the things the public thinks are done here, but also they can dance together (an act illegal at this time), express interest in each other, start relationships, and even have trysts in one of the rooms upstairs made ready for such. Though it is not much discussed these days, the Social Parlour was originally founded, and the house purchased for it, by Mathilda Cordelia Goodwill and Harriet Botsford.   A good deal of the women who frequent the Social Parlour come from old families, and knowledge of their inclinations could result in ruin, arrest, commitment to intuitions, or worse. Others are college students and staff who dare not have it be known lest they be expelled or fired. It would surprise the town to no ends that the majority of the women who make up the membership of Miss Andrew's Social Parlour are married and mothers. One of New Jerusalem's best kept secrets, it has not been unknown for two friends who suddenly found they had new feelings for each other to be guided here by more experienced, practical, and wise ladies.   Should the secret of Miss Andrew's Social Parlour ever become public knowledge it will spell ruination, scorn, and death (by suicide mostly) for more than a few women who only wished to be able to love the way their hearts tell them to.   Miss Andrew's Social Parlour is also home to two female Domestic Shorthair cats, Amelia Charlotte and Eleanor Catfield. They are both lovingly spoiled by Miss Andrews and all the ladies that frequent the Social Parlour. Amelia and Eleanor generally keep to themselves, though they occasionally venture out and about town. They are not only lovers, but both also know a good deal of magic and are knowledge about the secret cult in town and openly oppose it when they can. Eleanor is particularly protective of children.
