Dr. Pinter, Veterinarian - 184 E Saltonstall St

Old Doc Pinter, 69, works out of his home. Bill Pinter has been New Jerusalem’s favorite vet for years and is familiar with livestock and pets. If need be, he performs his services free of charge.   His house has a large back yard where stray and abandoned dogs and cats roam. Inside, many more of these animals are kept in kennels and crates until Doc Pinter can find them good homes. Accepted candidates are given the animal of their choice at no cost, but a donation is always appreciated by Pinter. He is beloved by the neighborhood children, who are his number one clients; many a pet in the homes of Southside children has come from Doc Pinter.   What no other humans know is that Bill Pinter is a class of rare and diminishing individuals - he is a Companion. A human ally who knows the truth about cats and dogs are neither a Burden nor a Friend; they are the Companions, those who actively aid the cats and dogs in their battles and missions. As such, Bill is aware of such matters as Wise Dogs, Cat Parliaments, and the various laws and customs of both, and he is able to communicate with cats and dogs directly. By ruling of the New Jerusalem Packs and Parliaments talking openly to Doc Pinter is allowed without any punishments or censor.   Currently living with Pinter are numerous animals who are either waiting to be placed with good homes or who are recovering from various injuries or sicknesses. Among them are:   Mama Bear, a youngish Greyhound and her six pups. She was abandoned by her family when they moved and could no longer afford her upkeep. After a late spring dalliance with a traveling stray she found herself pregnant and in need of shelter. Now she lingers here until her pups, just recently weaned, all go to good homes, then she will sort out her own future.   Rupert B. Wellington, an older British Shorthair who was seriously injured saving a local little girl from a strange pack of vicious rats seemingly bent on kidnapping the child. When the battle was over the little girl, Olive Wachowski, stuffed Rupert, 'Mr. Hero', into a pillowcase and rushed him to Doc Pinter who was able to save his life. Olive's parents have heard the tale from her hundreds of times now, as well as seen the dozens of crayon drawings depicting it that now adorn their refrigerator, and they intend to adopt Mr. Hero when his recuperation is finished.
