The Amaelians

The Amaelians were an elven noble family in southern Coralous, and one of the few noble families from mainland Ebronium that survived The Fall of New Coralous, thanks largely to their interest and investment in the Haven Forest area. The family supported the creation of the Coralous Union in the years that followed, and were a strong influence in the southern part of the island until they perished during The Lizardfolk Wars.

Structure

  • Before the Fall of New Coralous: Lord Devalin and Lady Asperiel
  • After the Fall of New Coralous: Ashenelle and Orcuros
In their prime, the Amaelians held the services of the following retainer houses:
  1. The Caedelus family - Chief retainers, entrusted with the lands around Haven
  2. The Endorlen family - Cosmopolitan nobility, struggled to establish themselves in the colony
  3. The Maelor family - Cousins of the Amaelians, adopted as a branch family
  4. The Kaursen family - Stewards of the New Coralous estate, lost in the Fall of New Coralous

History

Hailing from the mainland of Ebronium, the Amaelians jumped at the opportunity to help explore and colonize the island of Coralous, being one of the first noble families to make the long sea voyage. While they were heavily invested in the court life they had grown accustomed to in Ebronium, Lord Devalin and Lady Asperia, the family patriarch and matriarch, wanted to find a place that suited their elven aesthetic, and sent their retainers to look for a place of "primordial arboreal beauty." After a few months, the Caedelus family returned with word of a verdant marshland forest nestled among rolling hills. The nobles leaped at the news, sending their retainers to start establishing a presence in the area, naming the locale "Haven," and giving the Caedelus family control of the region. Even after the rise of New Coralous as the island capital, most of the family lived in Haven throughout the year, hosted by the Caedelus family, only returning to the capital when required for social events. Because of this, when the sahuagin invaded New Coralous, Devalin and Asperiel, who were attending a banquet, were lost to the carnage, while their adult children, Ashenelle and Orcuros, were still alive and well in the Caedelus family manse.   Following the birth of the Coralous Union, the Amaelians siblings threw their support behind the new government, assuming new positions as the rulers of Haven, and forsaking their archaic noble titles. Despite this, their retainer families still supported the house as they always had, and the people of Haven benefited from their combined clout. During The Lizardfolk Wars, however, things took a tragic turn. The Amaelians lead the Union forces in the south, suppressing the Hess’kik’ik Tribe quickly, and destroying many of the lizardfolk clans that resented their presence in the areas around Haven. Emboldened by their success, the Amaelian forces moved northward to the outpost of Two Pines to join the fight against the Fasss’har’n Tribe. Despite their strong and experienced presence, however, this campaign was cut short by a combined ambush of the Fasss'har'n and their allies in the Krh'shi'sn Tribe. The family's main force was slaughtered, with near total losses, including both remaining members of the Amaelian family, as well as their head retainer, Marcus Caedelus.

Disbandment

Neither of the Amaelian leaders married before their deaths, leaving no heirs to their holdings. Since Union law forbids the establishment or recognition of a noble house, and the head of the Caedelus family was also lost during the War, there was no single person left to unite the houses. While the loss of the Amaelians ultimately gave the forces in the north the rallying drive to rout and destroy their enemies, the retainers of the once great family became lost without a common leader to serve, and many of them left Haven following the war. Since then, the Amaelian name has largely been lost to history. They are fondly remembered in the towns of Haven and Two Pines, where the artifacts of the legacy are still on display, but few else in the Union remember the once-great noble house.
