Two Pines

The northernmost settlement in the Union; a town of hardy citizens and former soldiers

The town of Two Pines is a small, mostly human, settlement set where the Coralous and Red Pine rivers meet in The Highland Marshes, earning it the title of "The northernmost town in the Coralous Union."   Life in Two Pines can be hard, due to the climate and lack of natural resources, but those that live there tend to pride themselves on their ruggedness. The town's reputation, indeed, is one of frontiersmen and veterans, making people from the more "civilized" towns in the south wary of their northern neighbors. Like Zettersberg, the citizens of Two Pines enjoy a cessation of hostilities with the lizardfolk of the Krh'shi'sn Tribe to the south-east, and only rarely find themselves at odds with the handful of survivors from the Fasss’har’n. Despite this, holdover laws from the founding days make it legal for any citizen of Two Pines to kill lizardfolk without repercussion; leading some less scrupulous people to hunt them for sport and making lizardfolk visitors to the town a rare site indeed.   Also like Zettersberg, Two Pines hosts a druid circle to the north, the Marsh Plateau Circle, who have taken up residence in the now-abandoned marshes. These druids are very isolationist, however, and do not interact with the people of Two Pines, so travel into the north is still considered inadvisable, since the druids make no effort to police the creatures of the swamp or protect the people who venture there.

History

Founded originally as an outpost in the fight against the very hostile Fasss’har’n Tribe of lizardfolk in the northernmost marshes, a successful campaign by the united forces of the Union were ultimately able to destroy the tribe entirely. With no further need for armed forces, most of the soldiers left behind their fortifications, which the locals were quick to appropriate and rebuild into a civilian structure. Those fighters that remained helped shape the community that grew, making the people of Two Pines one of the most militant, self-sufficient, but racially intolerant cities in the Union.   In the last few years, Mayor Redfern has started making a push to bring his town closer to their southern neighbors, pushing for more civil modernization to attract interest from other settlements, but many of the citizens have resisted his attempts, insisting that they like things as they are. Despite this, the town's growing younger population is becoming increasingly interested in the ways of the south, making the prospect of modernization increasingly likely in the future.
