The Knights of Dragonbane

The Knights of Dragonbane were an order of knights devoted to the quelling of dragons in the kingdoms of mankind. Originally based in the Kingdom of Lysandus, they have now spread across the world of Talamh to give their services in exchange for payment.

Playing a Knight of Dragonbane

The Knights of Dragonbane are a playable background in campaigns for Talamh, as long as the game does not predate 1A 5715.

Knight of Dragonbane

The Knights of Dragonbane are mercenaries specifically trained to deal with monsters, such as orcs, giants, and specifically dragons. You have been trained from youth, becoming a squire at a young age (or are still a squire depending on your character's age). You learned basic survival techniques, including how to stay alive on the battlefield. The Knights of Dragonbane specifically learned how to read their foes, being vigilant in their quests to never be deceived by the forces of evil. They are also excellent trackers when it comes to seeking monsters, making it so enemies do not escape so easily when they avoid these valiant heroes.   The symbol of the Knights of Dragonbane is the greatsword called "Dragonslayer", but many knights prefer to use a bastard sword and shield in reverence to the founder of the order, Wulfric Dragonbane of Lysandus. With such a long, storied history, the Knights of Dragonbane have quite a reputation to uphold in the lands. Will you honor the reputation or squander it?

Skill Proficiencies Athletics, Insight

Features

Trusted Ear: Because of the reputation of the Knights of Dragonbane, it is not unsurprising that you will have folk within the city more than willing to house you. Inns, hotels, or even folk houses are yours to dwell in for considerably less rent. Also, when you ask townsfolk about monsters or hidden secrets within a town, they are more often willing to tell you, for they trust the organization you are a part of.

Suggested Characteristics

Being a Knight of Dragonbane is a title of honor among mercenaries, for only the greatest join this order. However, this does not mean you are a perfect beacon of greatness. You are a person like everyone else, but your quests strives to go beyond the limitations of humanity. Here are some examples to add to that.

Traits

Dice 1d6 Personality Trait
1When I arrive in a town, the people awe in my presence. I see myself as the hero my title says.
2I can stare down any monstrosity in the land.
3I'm inquisitive, constantly asking or searching for questions and looking for the darkest secrets I can find.
4Ferocity is my strong suit, in anything. Games, sports, partying are just a few examples.
5I face my problems head on. The simple solution can often be the best one.
6I am a chivalrous knight, paying respect to people of all ranks and backgrounds.

Ideal

Dice 1d6 Ideal
1The Greater Good. We are knights, meant to sacrifice our lives for the betterment of society when slaying foul beasts. (Good)
2Code. The Knight of Dragonbane must follow Wulfric's example to a tee, down to uniform and bravery. I'd die to uphold such things. (Lawful)
3Freedom. No evil creature, human or monster alike, will force the people what to do. (Chaotic.)
4Might. Only the strong may rule, much like the dragons of old, to vanquish my enemies. (Evil.)
5Sincerity. Let me be who I am, so that no citizen thinks I am above them. (Neutral)
6Chivalry. A knight is valiant and honorable in reputation. (Any)

Bond

Dice 1d6 Bond
1My loyalty to the Order of Knights is unwavering.
2The common folk must see me as a hero of the people.
3The dragons destroyed what I once held dear. It is my task to avenge those who fall to their wickedness.
4I fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
5Like Wulfric Dragonbane once was, my family is splintered. I must bring honor back to them.
6I'll always remember the first monster I had slain.

Flaw

Dice 1d6 Flaw
1I do not know when to stop myself in a fight, leading to unrelenting carnage.
2I am quick to anger to even the smallest insult.
3The world does revolve around me.
4I have weakness for the vice when travelling.
5I am unreasonable when it comes to hating my enemies.
6Secretly I envy the dragons, and wish to be as powerful as they are. Those in my order are suspicious of me, as it reflects the evils of Qenlynn Millerstone, Wulfric Dragonbane's enemy.

Composition

Weaponry

Often, a Knight of Dragonbane finds themselves equipped with heavy armor, such as chainmail, as well as martial weapons in memory of the bravery of Wulfric Dragonbane. Occasionally they will wear horned helmets, which is another homage to their founder. A shield is also part of their arsenal, which goes great with the Bastard Sword.
The Bastard Sword pays respects to the heritage of honorable Wulfric, as though it's name is demeaning, it proves to be the most dependable but ferocious part of a knight's arsenal.
Not every Knight of Dragonbane used this kind of weaponry of course. Some knights opt for lighter armor and bows, trying to slay dragons from a safe distance so they can avoid their deadly claws and jaws. Whatever the case, the Knights of Dragonbane are some of the greatest warriors you will see when they arrive within a town.

Tactics

Being notorious for their ferocity, the Knights of Dragonbane are not afraid to show the rage and calculation as the very dragons they kill use. Indeed, the Knights of Dragonbane are not afraid of using magic to cheat against their enemies, nor are they unwilling to play dirty. They often opt to take offensive tactics in order to whittle their enemies down in stamina and morale, despite how the knight may start to get injured.

History

The order of knights was started in the year 5715 by the veteran dragonlord named Wulfric Dragonbane. He took his nephews, named George, Brunwulf, Eadhed, and Eanulf, and trained them to be squires and eventually knights to protect the region of Keller from further dragon attacks, as well as other monsters in the land. The symbol of the Knights of Dragonbane would be the sword Dragonslayer, which Wulfric himself often had at his side when fighting. Eventually, Wulfric became old and left his nephew Brunwulf in charge of the organization. Wulfric would die in 5746, but the Knights of Dragonbane live on.   Ever since the passing of Wulfric, the Knights of Dragonbane, though still protecting Lysandus, decided to expand their reaches in different regions that needed help. They first expanded into Gothai by the middle of the 58th century and then set sail into the lands of Faraway in the 59th century.
