Lumicite Material in Cathrea | World Anvil

Lumicite

For the idiots that haven't yet grasped what this would mean for modern life, let me dumb it down for ya. Once we smarties figure out how this shit works exactly, you can finally say goodbye to your coalmine of a heating furnace and get warmth provided by the good ol' rich magicy guys, saving you what, five minutes of manual labor? Oh what great ideas! Meanwhile, the military will race to mass produce highly deadly weapons the likes you can't imagine in your wildest dreams and kill themselves off like ants living in a soon-to-be-roded forest. But hey, at least you save yourself those precious five minutes, right?

Properties

Material Characteristics

Lumicite is a crystalized looking ore that, depending on their currently stored Magicules type, shine in the elements respective color. Due to this light, the Lumicite got its name. In its natural form, its shape is quite irregular and chipped, though on the inside, it looks surprisingly polished.

Physical & Chemical Properties

When touched, the Lumicite feels surprisingly wet. This is due to the magic leaking out, towards something that can absorb the energy. It is quite hard, though after a few tries of whacking it against the ground as hard as possible, it will break.

Geology & Geography

Lumicite is most commonly found in mountain caves, though some veins were also found deep underground. Lumicite needs some sort of magical pool to draw from to crystallize and transform from normal rock to actual Lumicite. So in general, anytime the combination magic and lots of stone surroundings is achieved, Lumicite is not far.

History & Usage

History

Lumicite was thought of as just another fluorescent mineral whose powers faded over time for the majority of its known existence. In the early 9th and late 8th century, the Dryskhell Family discovered a way to keep the Lumicite glowing over longer periods of time and sold lots of it to nobles and royals at a very high price and keeping their knowledge a secret to everyone. In recent years, the Roxikyen Inventures explored the world and coupled up with the Circle of Senses, finding pioneering usages for Lumicite which would be more versatile and applicable than ever thought before.

Discovery

Lumicite was first discovered around the 2nd century and was long thought of off just another ore that glows, hence the name. Since the light seemed to dissolve over time while touching the mineral, the people shrugged it off as just another useless ore that can't survive outside its natural habitat.

Cultural Significance and Usage

After extensive research on Lumicite, the Roxikyen Inventures in cooperation with Baldemir Lohrk not only found a way to conserve its glowing properties, but also discovered why it was leaking in the first place. Lumicite stores different attributed kinds of Magicules, which glow when stored within. When something receptive to magic touches the mineral, the magic flows out in liquid form, leaving a gray unilluminated stone behind.

After further investigation, the researchers found, that not only can you output, but also input magic, and fuse different magical attributes inside the Lumicite. Knowing this, Lumicite is not in the verge of transforming modern magic society. It can be built into weaponry, amplify magical barriers or spells, and act as a sort of magical battery.

Its applications are limitless, but we need time to safeguard it. The power of Lumicite is too great to just hand over to anyone without prior knowledge or skill. Hence our decision to keep the research private. Private from the kingdom, private from guilds, individuals, royals and anyone else. This is for your own good.

Hazards

During the research on conserving Lumicite powers, lots of magic liquidated and went to waste. Some of it was absorbed by people, some of it dripped into the floors and vanished. No longterm effects have yet been discovered but researchers conclude that:
Raw magic like that can not just vanish. I think having lots of liquid Lumicite-magic run into you or the environment could pose some threat unknown. We are treading in yet undiscovered territories.

Additionals

Upon further research, a destructive phenomenon, named Elemental Flux Overload was discovered, in which the Magicules of two differently charged Lumicites mix and cause an explosion the size of a goblin.

Reusability & Recycling

Lumicite acts like a natural magical storage. It can input and output magical current. This is not to say that the magic is transferred lossless or there is no wear and tear. Lumicite breaks or malfuntions from time to time. What happens with the broken minerals is yet unknown, though research on recycling runs parallel to all other Lumicite projects.

Practical Application

Even through strong regulations regarding Lumicite, it has already found its way into modern technology. Heat amplifiers were built to liquidate metals whose melting points were too high for regular magicsmiths. The first elementally dischargeable weapons are in testing. Field tests have also begun on magical barriers, amplified through Lumicite powers.

In short, Lumicite is the fuel only restricted by imagination.

Artifactory

The Roxikyens found ancient artifacts in the royal Arcane Archive that worked with similar technology. Most of these relics were either thought defect or recetly broken. They partnered with the Arcane Archive to study some of the artifacts and found that the civilizations those relics belonged to had also made extensive use of Lumicite, though, as always, there were no records of said civilizations. At least not to their knowledge.
