The Hollow Valley

The Hollow Valley is a large glacial valley that occupies the southern third of Torfe.

Geography

Surrounded to the north, south, and east by mountains, The Hollow Valley traps warm winds blowing in from the west, creating a temperate environment. A number of rivers converge in the valley, which was cut by a glacier, to form the large Hollow River which brings fertile silt from the mountains to the grasslands there. At the very western edge, where the borders of Torfe end, the valley opens out into the unclaimed lands known as the Barren Steppe. In terms of settlement, most people in the valley live in small hamlets and farmsteads, but there are two towns. Leviva in the east, and Mist's Edge in the west.

Natural Resources

Compared to the northern highlands of Torfe, the Hollow Valley is lush indeed. Plentiful lumber can be found here and game runs abundant in the woodlands. The grassy hills are perfect for sheep and goats. The floodplains by the river support large areas of arable farming too, usually hardy gains and vegetables.

History

Originally, the Hollow Valley was considered unclaimed, dangerous territory as the gold rush era of archaeology in what was to become Torfe was in full swing. It was only after the archaeological focus shifted further north, and Torfe was established as a true nation, that people began to settle the valley. As they began to raise crops and livestock, the newly formed Parliament of Torfe decided to band the whole area together under one name, naming it after the river that ran it's length.
