Mental characteristics
Gaylord was born into the esteemed Hawkport family as the second son, destined for a life of support rather than leadership. While the weight of being heir fell on his elder brother, Chauncy, he has learned a lot of the same things, Gaylord has also carved out his own path as a diplomat among the nobles and as a strategist. He became well-regarded in political circles for his sharp mind and steady demeanor. Despite living in his brother's shadow, Gaylord never showed resentment and instead developed a quiet confidence, seeking purpose beyond the family estate.
Over the years, Gaylord found himself drawn into complex negotiations and advisory roles within the Commonwealth. Yet, despite his composed exterior, he always felt like he existed between two worlds. As the second son he bear the weight of following in Chauncy's footsteps but yearns for the freedom Josiah has as the third-born.
During the unfolding apocalypse, Gaylord, like the rest of his family, chose to stand by Josiah's side, recognizing his brother's burden, and not envying him for it. He is willing to help in anyway that he can.
Gaylord adheres to traditional Aurelian masculine ideals, while having an open mind about the feminine gender.
While publicly he presents himself as heterosexual, his family and wife are supportive of his sexual fluidity. He had several discreet affairs with both sexes in the past. Gaylord and his wife came to an agreement. They could each keep a lover of the same gender as long as heterosexually they remain faithful to each and have children. Their lovers remain a part of their household to this day.
Gaylord was educated alongside his elder brother, Chauncy, in the classical noble disciplines of diplomacy, history, literature, and statecraft. He also developed skill in strategy and negotiation, with an affinity for understanding human nature.
As a second son he doesn't have what some would call a concrete job, but he has been a political envoy for the Commonwealth, navigating the tense diplomatic relationships between the nobles and helping forge alliances. He was known for his impartiality and ability to deescalate volatile situations.
- Successfully negotiated trade agreements between feuding noble houses.
- Acted as an official Commonwealth mediator when there was a conflict between the Crown and the nobles.
- Became a trusted advisor to multiple noble families.
- Failed to prevent a catastrophic fallout between two rival noble houses, leading to unnecessary bloodshed.
- Occasionally overshadowed by Chauncy's commanding presence.
- Had a fallout with a male lover that was bitter and nasty, and it almost became public knowledge.
Gaylord carries the burden of witnessing diplomatic failures that resulted in suffering. He has an acute fear of failing those who depend on him and struggles with internalized feelings of inadequacy.
Analytical, observant, highly perceptive. Gaylord excels at reading people and anticipating their motives. He enjoys puzzles and strategic challenges.
Gaylord believes in loyalty, honor, and pragmatism. While he values tradition, he isn't afraid to challenge outdated systems if they harm the greater good.
- Betraying family loyalty
- Willfully harming the innocent
- Abusing power for personal gain

Quotes & Catchphrases
Strength isn’t always in the sword—sometimes it’s in knowing when not to draw it.
A steady hand can guide even the stormiest seas.
Gaylord and I are closer than Chauncy and I are. He and I have talked about many things and few times have even talked about my vision. It's never been often but it's more than the interest Chauncy has expressed. I don't mean to disparage Chauncy, I promise. I love both my brothers but they are different people. That's okay and they both support me as I support them.
